Need advice on wall storage by fireplace

Our wall looks similar to what is in the link below, except our fireplace is wider so the fireplace takes up a little more wall space and the mantle is not white, it is a natural medium wood color.  Our tv is mounted as in the picture so we need to add something to store our dvd player, cable, etc.  Someone recommended the two cabinets like what is in the picture as well.  To me the cabinets look dated.  Would something like the leaning shelves (in black) that is in the second link look better?  Or something that is shorter than the mantle and enclosed (like 3rd link and in black)? I'm really bad at decorating and would like advice before I spend the money.  I'm assuming I should have the same piece on both sides of the fireplace to even out the space?

I definitely think height on either side is important (unless you have a really small, low-ceilinged room).  Do a google image search for "Fireplace and Shelves".  Theres a few ideas there!
