DH and I have been married for a year and a half, we're finally going on our honeymoon in June.  I need to get my name changed on my passport, still, and H needs to renew his passport. 

1. how long will it take to get them back

2. how much is this going to cost?

My husband got his fairly quick after he applied for it (6-8 weeks), but I wouldn't wait much longer to apply. I still have to get my name updated on mine, but am holding out due to the $100 fee. I think it is also $100 for a new one. We were also told to get the passports not the cards, just in case you have to fly back into the country, pass cards will not work for that.

Yea, we're going to Jamaica, so we need the full passport...we only live a couple hours from Canada, so getting the cards too wouldn't be a bad idea.

It really depends, It can take as long as 9 months. My passport took 2 months, but that was a renewal. I've had a passport since I was 1, so not sure how long it takes for a new one. Renewals don't take too long, but would get it ASAP.

I just sent my renewal today certified mail but not priority. It was $110 for just the book, regular service. I will let you know when I get my new one back.

Thanks, I'm going to drag H to the post office with me to get the renewals/name change taken care of tomorrow!

Mine expired last summer so I updated it with my married name (we got married in 2011). I can't remember exactly how long it took, but I do remember remarking how fast it was; so I know it was less than 6 weeks, and probably less than a month. 

Just make sure that h's passport isn't already expired. If it is, I believe it counts as a new passport--not a renewal.

You cannot just change the name. You will apply again, sends in your current passport and they'll issue a new one. You'll get the old one back with a hole pinched in it. Do it now to avoid issues later.

I got mine last October and it only took like 4 weeks I think. The cost of changing your name is the same as a new passport. I was lucky because I got a passport less than a year before we married and it was free to replace/update name - you just have to get get it processed for a name change within a year of paying for one. That's the only way it's "free."

Filled out the application at the post office again. they said 4-6 weeks. ($110 fee). @allthebride you need the same form as the renewal, you have to send in your old passport with a certified copy of your marriage license documenting the name change.  sent in a new photo so I'm assuming I'll get a brand new passport with a new photo and my new name...my old one expires in 2017...so I'd rather get one good 'til 2024 than have to pay the fee again in 3 years. plus, now H and I should have the same expiration date so we'll be able to stay on top of them better.

Correct. You'll get a new one not just a name changed page like they used to do.

We got ours back mid-week last week, so about 3 weeks is right. Info for others, any documents you send with your renewal get sent back separately and not at the same time. I was a little surprised that my marriage license didn't come with my passport, I called, they said it could be another 3 weeks before my marriage license comes back to me.

I didn't realize I would get my marriage license and old passport back (hole punched) I got it one week after I received my new passport. I thought I would have to go to county clerks office and get another certified copy of my marriage license. So I was pleasantly surprised actually.

the woman at the post office who did the photos for us said that we would get any documents we sent with the renewal back when we got our new passports.
