I am certain he is ill. :(

edited February 2014 in Pets
I reported on very clingy and "wandering" behavior back in December.

My dog is still doing it.

He'll wander the rooms at night and he'll be standing in place or in a corner when I find him. He'll follow me but he'll do it again later on.

He is also all over the bed; he usually sleeps at the foot of it but since this time in December and even more often now, he's sleeping anywhere on the bed. Last night he was up on the pillow.

He'll also stand in place on the bed and stare off into the distance. I'll call him but he won't move.

He'll also endlessly paw at the mattresss. I know dogs do this for comfort reasons but his pawing goes on for a minute or more.

The vet told me it might be brain related; he mentioned the possibility of a lesion back then. The behavior let up for awhile but it's started again during the last couple of weeks.

My dog's got cataract problems and hearing loss; he is 12.

I don't know if an MRI will help for confirmation purposes..  If he's got a problem, he's got a problem.

I'm doing what I can to comfort him -- I know he must be scared.

Keep my doggus in your thoughts. In 3 months we will be best friends for 10 years.

  • I'm so sorry to hear your dog hasn't gotten any better.

Has the vet done any blood tests?

  • I'm sorry he hasn't improved at all. :( It's so hard watching them get older. I hope you're able to find something that helps him feel less...anxious? confused?

  • So hard to watch them get older.  Does the vet think getting an MRI to see what is going on will lead to treatments that will help improve his quality of life? Or is it more likely to diagnose something that you can't do anything about (and cost a lot of money in the process)?

have you tried finding a holistic veterinarian who might have some tools to help cope with the symptoms he is showing? I have a friend dealing with an older golden retreiver with Cushings, she takes her to a holistic vet who uses acupuncture, probiotics, and a special diet to aleviate some of the more troubling symptoms.

  • I'm so sorry, Tarpon.
  • So sorry, Tarpon. My guy is 11 and he does the same things. He also lost his hearing over the past year. I just figure he's old. He seems happy and not in pain though so I don't worry too much about his weird behavior. He's always been at least a little weird. Good luck!
  • He had a good night the last few nights but he is still awfully clingy.

There's a way to treat him holistically; I'm going to give it a try.

    Thanks for everyone's advice.
  • Poor buddy :-(
