WIJFR: Oryx and Crake

I like it, but I was not overwhelmed. I guess I had slightly high expectations, since it came as a you-must-read-this gift from a friend.

I did love the structure of the novel, but maybe I've just OD-ed on dystopian novels in the last year. While I respect it as a forerunner in the current renaissance of the genre, I didn't really feel that it was bringing anything terribly new.

Re: WIJFR: Oryx and Crake

  • I loved The Handmaid's Tale.  One of My Top Ten Books Ever loved.  Maybe I went into O&C with super high expectations, but I really disliked it.  I kept meaning to DNF, and then I'd see a rave review on how this was the best book in its genre and I'd think maybe I just hadn't gotten to the good part yet, and I'd pick it back up.  I finished it without ever getting to the good part.

I really enjoyed Oryx & Crake, but I totally get where you're coming from.  I love Atwood's writing style and I liked the world that she set up.  I felt like the characters were a little meh though.  I can definitely see how some people will really love it and others will not like it at all.

  • I've tried twice - once on audio and once in print, and I couldn't get into it either time.  Sadly, it has turned me off of Margaret Atwood generally, and I've heard good things about her other books.
  • I did NOT like this book.  It kept me turning pages, and I kept thinking something was going to happen... but then, nope.  I thought it was super pointless.  Even when I don't like the first book in a series I usually feel SOME desire to pick up the next one, but not with this one.

  • Well, this thread just convinced me to stop listening to O&C, I was admittedly not very far in but just wasn't getting into it and have several other audio books I'm more excited about.  I will probably go back to it at some point.
