Re: FRIDAY CONFESSIONS

  • I have heard a lot of talk about supplements but never really hopped on board, and honestly thought that they were kind of placebos.

Two weeks ago I started taking B12 and it has CHANGED MY LIFE. I want to make a frigging infomercial.

I don't even care if it is a placebo if it's working.

I don't know anything about supplements, what is B12 for?  How are you feeling differently? @jackiback

  • @NorthernLghts - good for you!  I'm glad to hear that everything is going so well and I hope that your birth goes as well as your pregnancy has!
  • @jackiback - if you're into supplements and needing more energy, you might try melatonin too.  It's usually recommended for sleep problems, but it can also help you regulate your sleep cycles, which gives more energy.

  • Thanks! It's going to mainly med-free so let's hope so! Can't have an epi or a spinal, just IV drugs. I realize people labor without drugs all the time so we'll see how things go.

I started taking melatonin and it did help me sleep better at night (I was dealing with insane insomnia)  but didn't seem to help with daytime fatigue.  It did get me back to a place where I feel tired at night and then fall asleep, which is a big improvement, but I stopped taking it after it got me back on track.

  • My sons class has to read Matilda and answer questions about the book.  They are allowed to bring the questions home but not the book (I think that's stupid.)  He asked me to help him with the questions.  My confession is that I've never read Matilda before ever in my life.  I know its a super popular childrens book but I couldn't help him at all because I had no clue.  He was surprised I never read it.  Guess I'm going to have to read it.

I should try them again. My mom is huge on supplements now and she's big into jumping on bandwagons, raving about stuff and then giving up on them. She gave me a bottle when I was dealing with PPD, but I was also taking Zoloft, so I didn't really see any difference so I stopped taking them. I've been off Zoloft for awhile now and have definitely noticed myself slipping again, so B-12 it is!

I've been taking B12 for years under physician recommendation.  I've had pernicious anemia and it helps with that as well as the fatigue thing.  It's the real deal.

My confession is that the longer it takes people to plan our 20th HS reunion (gasp!) the less I want to go.  I haven't told DH because he's been holding off on submitting his vacation requests until we get an answer from the guy coordinating it, but at this point I'm almost to the fuckit stage.  No, not almost.  I'm there.  If I hadn't promised a friend of mine in CA that we'd each go to the reunion if the other went, I'd say screw it.

It definitely helps!  So do prenatal vitamins.

I've been taking B12 and D supplements for a few years due to deficiencies- some people's bodies just don't absorb B12 like they should and if you live somewhere that doesn't get a ton of sun in the winter, chances are your vitamin D levels are low.

  • Speaking of B12.... this week has been a physical & emotional roller coaster. Tuesday, my wife started having blurred vision, dizziness, slurred speech, etc. All signs of a stroke. I brought her to the ER where they did immediate CT scan, then admitted her. The next day they did at least 6 more tests. Everything was normal except she has a severe B12 deficiency. They believe this could have caused her symptoms simply bc they can't explain it any other way. Anyway, now she has to do B12 injections once a month for the rest of her life.

On a side note, we've both had gastric bypass surgery. B12 deficiencies are VERY common in people who've had these surgeries. So, the doc says I should get checked too. Just on a hunch I asked if B12 can increase risk for miscarriage (I had two, back to back). He said VERY MUCH SO. This made me a sobbing mess for some reason. Guilt, relief, I don't know.

Anyway, D is feeling normal again and I've got blood tests scheduled for next week. I'm just going to pretend like this week didn't happen and enjoy my weekend. Amen.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

How scary!  Sorry thatyou had to go through all of that.  I'm glad that things seem to be okay now, and I hope that everything works out for you too.  Better to be taking injections once a month and at least know what's going on, right?  Good luck.

  • Lame confession that you can maybe consider my random in place of the confession I posted in the Thursday Randoms yesterday:

I have a bunch of Audible credits that I need to use so I can close the account.  I downloaded a book that looked pretty cheesy, but the reviews said it was hilarious.  If I were reading it, I probably would've have put it down by now, but the narrator is doing such a good job that I just snorted at my desk then burst out laughing.  I had to tell my co-workers that I got a funny email.

  • I'm supposed to go into Chicago for a meeting on Monday & Tuesday, and I haven't gotten anything back from the woman coordinating to confirm that we're still on. I'm really hoping that something got messed up on her end and that I don't have to go. I LOVE Chicago, but I can't afford two days out of the office right now.

  • I've decided I am a pregnant unicorn. Aside from heartburn, I have no complaints about being pg and I am prefectly fine with this baby staying in another 3 weeks. I also realize I am probably setting myself up for disaster next time.
Hahaha this is exactly how I felt! I bet next time it isn't going to be as easy! Also, HOW THE HECK DO YOU ONLY HAVE 3 WEEKS LEFT!!! So crazy/exciting!

Ugh.  I make up for having a perfect 1st trimester for having an miserable 3rd.  I swear I get all of the rare 'side effects' and none of the common ones.  Morning sickness?  Nope.  Bloody noses all the time?  Yes.  Cravings?  No.  Gestational diabetes?  Absolutely.  Gah.

  • This is more of a complaint, but I'm getting kind of frustrated with my doctor. I have PCOS and I'm starting to feel like no one gives a crap about it as long as I'm not TTC. I feel like instead of dealing with the issue at hand she's trying to get me out of her hair by trying to toss birth control at me. Why is the root of my health problem not important as long as it doesn't actively affect procreating? I still have a problem that I'd prefer not to just cover up the symptoms of. Kthanks.
