WIJFR: The Winter Ghosts, by Kate Mosse

I was turned on to this author a few years back, and I just love her.  She generally does medieval historical fiction, but in a way that ties past and present with a supernatural flair.  I wouldn't compare her to Outlander, because her writing is so very different, but I think those who like DG would like Mosse.  As for this book, I couldn't put it down.  Wow. Such a gorgeous story. I devoured this book. The storytelling is so beautiful; the imagery so lush. I felt completely immersed in the tale, and it's the kind of book that lovers of historical fiction relish. Fabulous.  I can't really say more about the book without giving it all away, but it was 260 pages of pure reading pleasure.

I've not read her so I can't say.  This book is a ghost story but in the gothic sense, not scary at all.

Closest comparison I could think of is Deborah Harkness or Elizabeth Kostova, both of whom I love.

  • I haven't read Mosse but it sounds like you'd like Kearsley, sassy.  Start with The Winter Sea.

  • I read Labyrinth last year, and I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. Have you read any of the Languedoc books?

...And it's funny that you say you mention Outlander, because I just looked up my review of Labyrinth and the first line is "Dan Brown meets Outlander (without the steamy bits)." (I was referencing the timeslip element more than the writing, which was more the Dan Brown part.)

  • I loved Labyrinth!  It was my first introduction to her.  I liked Sepulchre too, but not as well.  I'm excited for Citadel next month, too.
