Hi, we just decided to take our kids to Disney for the first time. Dh and I have been a bunch but never with the kids. I feel like there is so much I don't know and have no idea where to start. Any suggestions on helpful websites or books that could help in the planning?

And the Dis boards were all great resources - I liked on the dis boards that had a really good explanation of each ride and decide if it was one that we wanted to see or not.
When we went in January, it was our first time with a kid. So I made some documents on MS Word to help organize my thoughts.
I made some lists of must sees, see if we have time, and things to avoid. I organized them by different sections or lands of the park. So going in, I knew which rides were ones we wanted to see and ones we didn't.
I knew we were doing 2 character meals so I planned things around them. I also downloaded My Disney experience and undercover tourist wait times on my phone. I kind of kept an eye on wait times for a coupe weeks before we went, so I could get an idea of how long waits were at certain times through the day.
We stayed offsite, so we didn't get to have magic bands and had to scheduled our fast passes the day were at the parks. We got to the parks as early as we could, as close to rope drop as possible. My husband got in line and got our fast passes scheduled while I took my son on a few rides in fantasy land- small world, carousel, etc, at MK. We did the same thing at Epcot and HS too- I took my son on some simple kid rides while my husband got in line. it worked well for us.
As far as touring goes, aside from having character meals and fast passes scheduled, once we were in the park we just went wear the wind took us. if something had a long line (more then 40 minutes) we went and did something else and came back to it. We got a TON done. We also made my son take a nap in his stroller every day we were there. So, we were able to get their early and stay late.
For the lines I bought a bubble gun from a kiosk at the park and bubble refills. That kept him busy in the lines for a long time. No metldowns or issues at all.
