Hair coloring...salon or self?

After just spending a lot of money getting my hair colored after moving to LA, I realized maybe I could do my all over single color by myself like many others...but the thought terrifies me. Do you do it yourself, or go to the salon? What are your thoughts on both? TIA! Any tips would be nice ;)

Re: Hair coloring...salon or self?

  • I tried to do it myself to save some money, but after couple tries I realized I am better off paying someone to do it. My hair got damaged, and the color just never looked right. I have really long hair, I think shorter hair would be easier? So my advice is, pay someone else to do it.
  • Thanks! I have long thick hair, too, and with my natural color having ash tones (meaning it turns greenish if I dont use the right color dye), and with the dark brown color I've been using, I'm afraid i'll make a mistake somewhere. There's so many ways it could go wrong haha
  • It is definitely easier to have someone else do it, but if you are really looking to save money, at least for a little while, I don't see doing it yourself as a problem. I've colored my friends' hair multiple times from those boxes and it always comes out looking great. And if you end up not liking the final product, you could always go back to a salon to get it fixed.
  • I find that it can depend on the color as well. I'm a natural brunette, and planning on going red after my wedding.  I've been told that red can get really brassy if it's not processed properly, so I will probably play it safe and go to a pro. I bleached my own hair once and it turned out Barbie doll blonde instead of golden toned like I wanted, so I try to either stick to browns if I do it myself or go to the salon if I want something totally different
  • I get help from friends or family to get my hair colored as it become very expensive to get your hair colored at salons.
  • I was having my mom do it at home when I was younger. My hair got too long though so I eventually stopped. (One box of dye wasn't enough)
I probably would go to a salon if I were to pursue that route again.

    Same here!

In fact after years of trying to maintain red hair at home and in the salon I've given up the hassle and gone back to my natural colour!!
  • it's depend , if it's ur first time could be better to do it in salon cauz evry thing is available . but if you think that you can doit it by urself , it's better to save some mony .
  • Go to the salon because they are more professional.
  • Salon.  It's not worth the mistake!
