AW - Cellphone Bill

So I have been thinking about switching to Straight Talk Wireless. They have a new plan now where you can bring your phone with you and then get unlimited everything for $45 a month. They use the same towers as AT&T which is who I have my wireless service through now so there would be minimal change in coverage.

I called AT&T today to see when my contract was up(6/18/2015) and how much it would cost me($245) to get out of said contract. The lady on the phone was SUPER helpful in trying to keep my business and showing me discounts and plans that would work better for me. I was leery since you usually hear about them dropping rates to keep you as a customer but I’ve never had it work for me. But this was some serious dough. Let’s break it down, shall we?

$20 a month less for a bundled plan that included everything I already had plus unlimited minutes instead of 450

$3 a month less because I don’t need them to locate my phone should I lose it since iPhone offers that feature for free

$20 because they prorated the old plan into the new plan for this month

$30 in past overages as a courtesy

and my discount for where I work transfers too!

So, basically, I’m saving $29 a month now on top of a couple other things and am only paying a bit more to stay with AT&T instead of Straight Talk, and I don't have to pay to get out of my contract. If I add it all up over the time that I will still have this contract, that twenty minute phone call saved me almost $500 over the next year AND I don’t have to switch services!

Holy crap, I’m excited!

Re: AW - Cellphone Bill

  • We did the same thing recently! Our contract with Verizon was up in January so we were going to upgrade our phones. Well they wouldn't let us keep our grandfathered plans of unlimited text/data and 750 minutes shared. We were already paying 175 for our plans, but with the switch we were going to have to pay an additional $30 a month/phone on top of our monthly plan. No, I'm not paying $235/month just to keep them.

We took a look at AT&T and they gave us a great deal for us - unlimited text/talk, with 10GB data/month, and insurance, along with DH's discount - for $129/month. Definitely worth it for me and I've had no issues since having our phones.

  • I was a L-O-Y-A-L Sprint customer for almost 10 years and when they started jerking me around, dropping benefits and raising rates, I shopped around and found AT&T for roughly the same price. I haven't had any issue with them since and after today I am a VERY happy customer!

  • Those are some awesome savings!

We live in BFE rural IL.  So the only thing that works in our town is US Cellular.  It stinks not having an option. Especially when we would get a good discount with Verizon, but it doesn't work where we live. :-(
