What are topics you avoid in books?

By that I mean if you're reading a description what things make you move on?

For me anyone dying or someone getting over a recent death and the mention of unhappy marriages make me not interested in the book.

The only way I will read a book like this is if it's recommended to me several times.

What other things in books do you try to avoid?

Unless it comes HIGHLY recommended by people I trust, I normally avoid books that involve cancer and/or a dog's death/animal abuse.

  • End of the world type stuff. I'm even starting to shy away from dystopian, which used to be my favourite genre. Freaks me out.

Zombies and fairies - no interest

  • Books where children are abused or are abducted. I have always had a hard time with the topic, but since I've had children of my own it has gotten personal.

There are some exceptions. I read Room by Emma Donoghue because it was so highly recommended. So, I guess I'm like you where the book would have to have lots of stars.

  • I stay away from books centering around infidelity in marriage, especially when it's in a positive light.  Infidelity in dating, while not okay, doesn't turn me off to the same degree.

I feel uncomfortable with books that come too close to the line of domestic violence, stalking, etc.  Somebody sneaking into your room to watch you sleep isn't hot and romantic.  It's creepy and dangerous, especially in fiction meant for younger audiences who are still forming their values and boundaries.  (The Twilight example popped into my head just now.)

  • The one and only thing I will not read is books about pets (i.e. Marley & Me, Dewey the Library Cat, etc.) because we all know how it ends and I can't even handle it.

I can handle people dying, child abuse, rape, end of the world, brain eating, cannibalism, torture, occult, war, plague, and total mass destruction, but don't make me sit through the death of a pet.

I still love end of the world stuff, but yes, it's really starting to freak me out. Especially electromagnetic pulse type stuff that are actually very conceivable.

I agree with the infidelity in marriage that is shown in a positive light. I just can't.
I don't like child or animal abuse/neglect. Or children dying.
I don't like books that could be mistaken for an episode of Criminal Minds. I get too many nightmares.

I am a sucker for a book that makes me feel. So I do read books that involve animal death, death in general and miscarriage/still birth/pregnancy loss. But I only read these books at the right moment.

Eta- drug use. I can't read books that heavily showcase drug use. It is a big turn off.

I didn't used to have a problem with it, but now I CANNOT handle it.

    I avoid this too.

Also, anything with an animal main character - I just never enjoy them.

I lack empathy when it comes to humans, but am a blubbering mess when it comes to animals. Go figure.

I'm with you guys. Even the slightest hint of animal abuse turns me off and makes me miserable.

  • I really enjoy NOT reading the description on a book before I start it, so a lot of times I completely fail at avoidance.  When I can, though, I try to avoid abusive relationships as a whole and sexual assault, rape, and any kind of child abuse specifically.

I also tend to not like really girly books.  Like, Lifetime move type books are not my style at all.  So maybe it's fair to say I try to avoid "women's issues" generally.
  • books about plagues or global pandemics.

  • If I can anticipate a sad ending (ie book about cancer, dogs) I won't bother to read it unless it has been recommended to me a billion times (John Green books).

I am not at all interested if the protagonist is going to cheat on their spouse.

I don't really like crime novels.

  • I'm also on the list for animal abuse/cruelty and the death of a pet. I'm actually getting choked up just thinking about it. The book would have to be recommended by a lot of people for me to be willing to try it, even then I know I'd have a tough time.
