I am pretty sure mine just started. I am bleeding now, and I have some pretty horrific cramping. It comes in waves and I feel like (TMI!!!) I have to make a pretty large BM, but I don't need to, if that makes sense. I have thrown up once. Nurse's line said to take Tylenol for pain and report for u/s tomorrow. Is what I'm experiencing normal for a fairly early mc? I feel like it's way too early to have contractions, but I can't describe the waves of cramping any other way. Also, if I haven't completed the m/c by u/s, will they send me right in for D&C? I just want this to be over, and I don't think I can handle seeing this m/c happen. I took tomorrow off just in case I can get in for the D&C. Thoughts?

ETA: good news is that I don't have a fever.

The good news: There's nothing visible in my uterus. The pain subsided in the middle of the night. I have no clue if/when I passed it.
The bad news: They haven't ruled out ectopic. FML. It happens in so few IVF pregnancies. I'm already on the shit end of the stick. I'm anxiously waiting for the doc to call.

My miscarriage was at 6w2d. I remember having cramps, but not like normal ones. They like build up, get painful, and then subside. It was my first IVF cycle and I was still on Crinone so I didn't bleed. It was super weird.

Yes. This is it. Exactly. Even to the day. Thanks, ILRV. It makes me feel less terrified that this is abnormal.

First of all Poppies, I am so sorry if that is what you are experiencing and going through right now.  Natural m/c's aren't easy to handle or do.  So know that to begin with.

***This will get detailed, but I'm a straight forward person. So beware for others reading.***

What you're experiencing is likely contractions and your body doing its thing to pass it naturally.  If you feel like you need to make a bowel movement, then do so.  Mine was full blown contractions, throwing up from the pain, and passing it after feeling like I needed to go to the bathroom.
They warned me that there could be a huge rush of blood beforehand and afterward, and that you could continue to bleed afterward.  But that if you soak through 3 pads within 30 minutes, then to go to the ER.

*Intense detail time*  Mine was 5w6d, and came out about the size of a softball.  So I definitely knew when it was over.

I had done the suppository to put me into labor, because I really did not want a D&C. They told me that if it did not all pass the first time, then we would do another round if I was okay with it.  After 2 rounds of trying naturally, then they wanted me to do a D&C.  At any time they were willing to switch to a D&C if I had changed my mind.

So many hugs to you Poppies.  You are strong, and I hope that this will help give you some closure.  I know that nothing I say right now will make this better or make this okay, and it is a huge whirlwind of emotions to go through.  You and Mr Poppies are in my prayers.

ETA: That I did not bleed at all and had no warning it was coming. Except for the cramps/contractions. Then just spotted for about a week after.

  • So many hugs to you poppies. It sounds like that's what's happening. Mine was just over 9 weeks and sounds like what your experiencing - the worst cramps ever that would come and go. Take tylenol! Get some pads (you're not supposed to use tampons) and take care of yourself.

TMI - you'll know when if passes but I just tried not to look.

I would guess if it's happening on it's own they won't send you for d&c right away but probably depends what they see.

Again big hugs and I hope this is over for you soon.

  • I'm so sorry poppies.

I had a natural m/c at 6w. Like others, I had cramps that felt more like contractions than normal menstrual cramps. *TMI* I bled for a few hours and then felt like I needed to push something out. I felt a popping sensation and then passed a clot and the bleeding and cramping lightened after that.

I took Advil PM and tried to sleep it off.

My Dr wanted to try and let me pass it naturally before having a d&c. I'd think yours may want to do the same.

Again, I'm so sorry. Many hugs to you.

  • Thanks, everyone. DH called my doc because he's so worried about my pain. She needs me to hold on until tomorrow, and if my numbers drop from 791, I can have the D&C tomorrow (she hopes). DH asked about going to ER, but she said absolutely not because they will just throw our baby away. I keep talking to it and saying that it's okay to go. I just don't want to be in pain anymore.

I haven't had a natural m/c (I had D&Cs both times), but I do work in an ER.

If you can't handle the pain or are changing a pad more than once an hour for a few hours, it's absolutely appropriate to go to the ER. In my hospital, they would send anything to pathology, but we are required to offer parents a death certificate regardless of gestation if that's something they would like, and there is also a local cemetary who offers (mass) cremations for free. If you did go to the ER and were interested in similar services, I'd encourage you to ask about them (sometimes we forget to offer because we don't do it terribly office).

Your doctor's comment puzzles me because if you have a D&C, they'll send everything to pathology too, so I don't really understand the difference. We don't just throw things in the trash, and I can't imagine any other hospital would either -- there are procedures and policies in place for things like this.

I am so sorry you are going through this. :(

  • Hi Poppies, I'm so sorry you are living this.
My last one was natural at just under 6w and felt like diarrhea cramping and was accompanied by diarrhea. I didn't know specifically when I passed the products of conception but I did pass pretty large clots for three days. And spotted for two more after that. In case you need a D&C, the scariest part is going under. I had no physical pain. You are in my thoughts...

  • I had a natural m/c at 7w1d.  I started bleeding, went in for an u/s and found we had lost the baby.  I was sent home and the worst happened that night through the next afternoon.  I kept sitting on the toilet because I was having really bad cramping and it felt (like you described) like I needed to poop.  I passed a lot of tissue, and figured I had passed it all.  I got into the shower and as I had my leg propped up on the side to clean down there, the sac came out.  It was probably the diameter of a half dollar?  As soon as that happened, the cramps stopped.  It was weird, like my body was done "having" the baby.  The rest was just bleeding like a heavy period.  We went in to make sure I had passed everything and didn't need a d&c.

I'm so sorry for you loss.  :(

  • I should clarify that my doc's comments were interpreted through DH, who is obviously devastated and worried.

In weird IF news, we ran into old friends today. They live an hour and a half away, so it was strange to see them in our area. Fate. She sent me a FB asking if everything was okay. She didn't want to pry but sensed sadness. They have been married as long as we have, and I've suspected they are 3T. So I told her. Yup, they have been through this hell, too. Why does this happen to good people?

  • I'm sorry :( that's exactly how it went for me all three times. Though I never passed anything incredibly huge all at once so just know that not everyone does. I think it's a state by state decision on the death certificates, as that is relatively new, but I could be wrong. If you pass everything at home there is nothing to save anyways and honestly most of the time those results don't show anything of interest since often there really was no reason for it. I took ibuprofen and kept a heating pad on my stomach. I didn't bleed enough to go to the ER but I did bleed quite a bit. I didn't want a d&c with any of mine-that just seemed to make an even bigger and more traumatic deal over it. I wanted my own bathroom and my own bed. The worst of it was in the first 12 hours anyways.

So no, this isn't abnormal. Just incredibly shitty. Also, beware the horrific constipation that comes next. That pain was just as bad. I tried the second and third time to ward it off but was only mildly successful the third time. It was just salt in the wound.

Hang in there, and I'm really sorry you have to deal with this.

  • First, lots of love and hugs to you Poppie. I am so sorry you are going through this.

I took a suppository as well. The first time was just a lot of bleeding, the cramps didn't really start till the next day. They checked my numbers after and they weren't low enough so they had me try the suppository again. I took again and it was more painful and there was more blood. Like you said, it felt like I had to have a BM, but didn't.

Of course as most of you know, I didn't loose everything afterwards. Sometimes, it would feel like a fish was swimming in my stomach and I'm told that was most likely my body contradicting trying to get rid of the rest. I had a d&c last month (m/c started end of Oct).

The d&c wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I'll be thinking of you and praying for you.

  • All of this just breaks my heart, Poppies.

I was 6w2d when mine happened also. I'd had very minor brown spotting the Saturday before, with a little bit of more red spotting the next evening (the emergency line at my OB's office assured me everything was fine and it was probably from having sex). Late that night/early a.m. Monday all hell broke loose.

My pantyliners weren't cutting it anymore, and I had horrific cramps, a lot like what ILRV described with building up and then sort of waning; they never really felt like contractions to me though. After having to go out and buy pads at 4 a.m., the bleeding eased up around 9 or 10 a.m. I don't know if I'd passed the sac at the point or not; I never knew when that part happened, but I didn't have any more cramping after that first awful night. I bled for 3 days and then spotted for 2 more, and my numbers the following week confirmed my fears.

I'm so sorry. I hope you can find some relief today and that they can take of everything for you tomorrow (if you want them to go ahead and do the D&C just so it's "over with").

  • Try not to worry too much (I know, I know). The only reason they can't rule it out is because they couldn't find anything in your uterus. That's likely because you already passed it. The good news is that the pain has gone away. If it were ectopic you'd likely still be in pain. Hang in there.

They were concerned for me with the last one for the same reason. But no pain is a good sign.... I'm sorry you are having to go through this. It really sucks...
