Adopted a new cat .. while husband is deployed - advice needed!

Hi everyone!

My husband has always had a soft spot for cats. He had three while growing up, and the last one passed away right before he deployed. So when a friend found a stray cat, I thought I would give cat ownership a try since getting a cat was always "in our plan eventually". I figured it would be a good companion for me while he was deployed, and also satisfy his need to have a cat while giving this sweet kitty a home & family.

It's been a little over a month, and I'm obsessed with the cat. She's my baby and my family makes fun of me for becoming a "cat lady". The only issue is my husband is set to return sometime this summer. Obviously he's never met our sweet cat. I've already talked to my cat, and kind of want to use her advice as a last resort (apparently cats can take behavioral meds during transition times). I just don't want my husband to come home from deployment to find he is no longer welcome in our house (hahaha). Any tips/advice/etc would be greatly appreciated !

Re: Adopted a new cat .. while husband is deployed - advice needed!

  • I should add, my husband knows about the cat. I wasn't planning to adopt it without his permission. He was excited to have a "fur baby" and was happy to know I had company while he was away.
  • I don't think there will be a problem if he loves cats, why wouldn't he love this cat? Is there any problems with it that might upset your husband?

We have 2 cats, I picked them both, my husband loves them, he wanted a cat, I just so happened to know where to find them, lol!
  • How does the cat behave around other men it's encountered? we have one that seems to have a gender preference, or at least has something against bigger men. My mom's first cat was only 2 years old when she and my dad got married and that cat was agressive towards him until the day the cat died, so I assume that's the situation you're looking to avoid?

did your H leave any dirty shirts around? maybe put one in kitty's favorite sleeping spot? one of the feliway diffusers might help with the transition too.

  • I recommend Feliway as well! And when he comes home, probably he should just try to leave her alone for a bit and let her be the first one to approach him. Cats seem to know when you're trying too hard! (it does seem like they are even more attracted to guests who don't like them)  Good luck!

I think it's adorable that you accidentally said "cat" when you meant "vet" in your post, btw :)
