QOTD 3/18

Is the area you live (or grew up in) notorious for anything?

  • John Dillinger grew up about 3 miles from where I did.  If you saw the movie Public Enemies with Johnny Depp, he really nails the local accent.

    Also corn & tomatoes.

  • The town I went to school in was rumored to be the teen pregnancy capital of Canada...so there's that.  In general it was known as a dirty town, with lots of alcoholics, drug users and teen parents.  People who stay there rarely amount to much.

The place I live now is very well known for it's town fair and for poultry.  There's even a big sign that says "Chicken-food created with nature;s approval"

  • My hometown has more churches per capita than anywhere else in the world.

My hometown really isn't known for much.  It's a small town, that branched off of Stillwater "The birthplace of Minnesota."  So we all consider ourselves part of Stillwater.  It's history is known for lumberjacks and mobsters.  The Cure, Grumpier Old Men and a few others were all filmed in Stillwater.

Minnesota as a whole is known form crazy winters, Bob Dylan, Prince, and the movie Fargo.  PS. we don't really talk like that...

  • I grew up in Hudson, OH...so Western Reserve Academy is about it. We have an awesome downtown, green, and clocktower! (so...not super note worthy, but I love it!)

I got the idea for this because I was watching Snapped on Oxygen this weekend and there was an episode about a murder/bribery/sex slave case that happened in the town that I live in. (Google Fred Andros).

We even had a serial killer, Kendall Francois.

My area also had one of the first major road rage cases where a man was shot and killed on Interstate 84. The person was never caught. The case was featured on Unsolved mysteries and Americas Most Wanted.

  • Before I moved to Austin, I lived in Littleton, CO.  You may remember the shooting at Columbine High School, which happened right after I moved to Austin.

Austin has two main motto's - "Live Music Capital of the World" and "Keep Austin Weird".  SXSW (south by southwest) and Austin City Limits are two big music festivals that attract a ton of people and the first country iHeart Radio concert is also happening here.  We are also known for 6th street and the beautiful hill country and lakes.

  • Oneonta, NY. It's known for being a small college town - we have two universities and the population doubles when school is in session - for having a lot of bars and pizza places, specifically for cold cheese pizza (which is weird but delicious!) and POT. Everyone calls us "Stoneyonta". :P

  • The Son of Sam lived in my city, even though he did all of his killings in NYC.  DMX and Mary J. Blige are from where I live.  So is Steven Tyler, although he says he's not.  He was expelled from our public school system.  Ella Fitzgerald is also from here.  She attended the school that I used to work in.  Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X's widow lived here also.

Otis Elevator used to have a major factory here.  Kawasaki took over a lot of it and makes train cars here now.

Hello Dolly and Lost in Yonkers take place here.
  • I grew up in Nashville, TN...music city, country music capital! Yet, I've never been a big county music person...haha. Also home of Andrew Jackson, former President of the US.
