  • I think it looks pretty fantastic. I wasn't expecting a black and white movie.

  • Instead of watching the trailer I clicked on the damn spider thing on the side and now I am horrified and traumatized for life.

  • A B&W movie would have given away the fact that they can't see color, which is a huge spoiler for the story. I was actually going to be mad if the movie was in B&W at the beginning.

I'm not mad about the lack of black and white. But the fact that most of the trailer is barely recognizable as The Giver? I think I'd be excited for this movie if it wasn't based on the book. Which, well, other than some obvious things, it doesn't really look like it is.

    Edit: posted too soon.

  • I didn't know they were making it into a movie at all. Im not happy. That book needs to be a book in my opinion.

  • I finally watched it with my students. They all said "__ wasn't in the book!" I said, "guys, I don't think ANY of this was in the book."

  • That is the thing. These are MOVIES. I've given up expecting them to be like the books. If they are entertaining and don't suck, I'm happy.

I'm totally fine as long as it keeps the spirit of the original story, since I know that things that work on the page (like the color thing) don't always work visually.

But this doesn't even look like it resembles anything about the book, which is annoying. In that case, just write a new movie and call it something else.

I think it looks promising. It looks VERY different from the book, but I don't think it's unrecognizable. It looks like it's going to focus on the questions that are addressed in the book about society, humanity, etc.

  • I reserve the right to retract all of this if Taylor Swift records a terrible and annoyingly catchy song for the soundtrack.

  • Honestly I'm not surprised that they've added things.  Unless they were going to make the script right out of the book (like they did with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe), there's not enough material to make a movie.  But to me it looks like they're really keeping to the spirit of the book.  And I'm loving Jeff Bridges, as always!

  • I'll see it and give it a chance. But seriously, changing the main character's age is just a way for them to shove more of a romance down our throats. Because it is a young adult dystopian film. Romance is obviously necessary.

I am a well-renowned movie adaptation hater, but not because of this. If anyone watches this movie without having read The Giver first, fuck them.

  • Hmmm... I think Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges seem perfectly cast so we'll see. This has to be one of those instances where I have to completely disconnect because The Giver is my favorite book of all time.

The post I read on EW said Meryl's character was evil, and she does come off that way in the trailer. I bet Meryl owns it like no other because she's Meryl and she rules all, but...ugh. The Chief Elder isn't supposed to be evil at all. She doesn't know. That's the point...none of them know.

It also referred to Fiona as Jonas's love interest, so, yeah, looks like romance is blooming! Someone is having his Stirrings!

I read this as a kid and to me, what I pictured then continues to be what I picture now. I'm not as much bothered by the story in color as I am with these sweeping rooms with high ceilings and high-techy vibe. I pictured a society that had simplified and almost gone backwards because of what the harms of society had done. I see two totally different stories. As much as I'd like to give it a shot, I think I'll skip this one.

Same here, I pictured something along the lines of 'The Village'

  • Yeah...there's NO tech in the book at all. A lot of that has to do with the fact that it was pubbed in the early 90s and there was no internet/cell phones/etc. But also because it's just a very simple society.

But that movie probably wouldn't sell against HG / Divergent / etc.

I just feel like the movie people read a different version of the book than I did or something.
