My puppy-girl is getting spayed tomorrow!

I know this is a ridiculously routine proceedure, but can I still be a little worried about her?

she's spending the night at the vet tomorrow night, not looking forward to a night without her

awww i was worried about my guy too when he got neutered.  Its ok to worry and im sure it will all go fine!!

I worried about mine when he had to go in (though I had his scheduled WAY before his weebles dropped [because we were also bringing home a female puppy, and I did NOT want him to ever breed her]).

That overnight thing was stressful.  Sure, it's routine, but...

That said, if she can have a toy or a towel or blanket from home for her overnight, it might help alleviate some of her stress.  Unfortunately, there's no "binky" to alleviate OUR stress.

She's so confused that she isn't getting breakfast, they said I didn't need to bring any bedding with me, but I may throw her blanket in the car so she can have it if that's allowed. I'm going to go with a big glass of red wine after the gym tonight

I think it's perfectly normal to worry when your pup goes in for their operation! I was a wreck the morning our guy got neutered! You're right that it's perfectly routine and you're doing what's best for her. Make sure to give her extra love when you see her tomorrow! Good luck!

Yay! I just spoke with the vet and Puppy did GREAT! she had some behavior problems at the vet in november and they said in addition to doing great through the surgery they were really impressed with her behavior improvements (giving myself a little pat on the back for being persistent with her ).

Ok...help! 

So twice now I have found urine soaked spots after puppy has napped someplace! one morning I woke up and the post-surgery t-shirt I put her to bed in was soaked, I thought maybe she just couldn't make it through the night, that has happened before, when she was on a course of prednisone I just wasn't quick enough to get out of bed. so I thought that maybe with surgery messing up her schedule that had happened again. I asked H to keep an eye on her and he says he hasn't noticed anything, but sometimes he just doesn't notice things, even if I ask him to pay attention. 

and now just this evening after pups took a nap on the couch there was a ring on the couch after she got up, it didn't feel wet, but it smells of urine. We already made an emergency trip to the vet yesterday when I noticed some discharge from her incision (turned out to be nothing to be worried about, and H has teased me about being a worry-wart). Now I'm concerned that she has some surgical complication that is making her leak urine when she's sleeping! I'm so exhauseted from my late night trip to the vet yesterday, and I don't want to be that crazy person who keeps bringing her dog to the vet for nothing.  Do I wait until monday when our vet is open and call to see what they suggest? do I make another emergency visit to the animal hospital tomorrow? 

Pups doesn't seem uncomfortable, and she doesn't squat repeatidly when we go out, like I lmagine she would if she had a UTI. I'm such a nervous mom, H thinks I'm crazy.

hmmm she could just be out of sorts from the surgery and medicines.  I would wait and call the vet on Monday to see what they say.

For humans the lasts thing to "wake up" after anesthesia is the GI/GU (bowel/bladder). Maybe she just isn't able to hold it at the moment because her body is still "waking up". If it's a surgery induced complication, I would doubt it would make a difference if she went to see the vet now or Monday. I would wait. If it would put your mind at ease, call the vet and see if they have an on call who can advise.

she seems to be okay today...I've been the crazy one inspecting any area she naps after she gets up. I'll check in with them on monday, they defer afterhours consulting to the 24 hour vet clinic that we visited on friday, if we have another incident before tomorrow I'll give them a call. we've just been trying to give her lots of opportunities to empty. She is 10 days post-op, her bowels definitely took several days to normalize, and her schedule has been off.

Awe! Poor girl! I didn't see how long it had been. Hopefully she's just having a little bit longer time recovering. I know it stinks when you can't call and talk to a vet. 

Since it's been that long I would certainly say it's not something to incur another expensive emergency vet bill for. Let us know how she does!

Thanks she's such a good snuggler we've always let her on the couch with us, we'll just have to do our best to keep her on her bed (spoild girl has one of those big LLBean beds) so she doesn't leave any more spots on the couch if we have another incident. fortunately since the surgery the kitties have taken to snuggling with her...so she won't be lonely on her bed.

I don't know what type of sofa you have, but we have one leather sofa (forgiving, but not if you don't catch the accident right away) and a microfiber one. I hate our mocrifiber sofa because it is terribly uncomfortable...but...I can throw the cushion covers in the washer on delicate and they come out perfectly. Don't try it unless you know your warranty or don't care but I've have great luck. If you can't remove your cushion covers, an amazing product is Nature Miracle...it works great.

we have microfiber sofas, and have covers to go over them (unfortunately covers were in the wash when pups had her little incident). I've cleaned the cushion with nature's miracle...love that stuff. 

more concerned about the dog than the couch...but spoild girl can suffer a few days in her Giant LLBean bed until we get this sorted out.

phew just got off the phone with our vet (Love her!) she siad she's had a female that had this post-surgical incontinence for a couple months, but it went away. 

she thinks the mechinism is a combination of things:

1. she just had major surgery that went through her abdominal wall, which could have weakened her "hold-it" muscles.

2. She's on low-dose prednisone, which causes her to drink a little more and therefore have a slightly fuller bladder

3. she's young and sleeps hard...so she gets to such a deep sleep that with the above 2 factors she looses bladder control. 

so with a little more R&R her abdominal wall should strengthen and hopefully when the vet can get apoquel(sp?) in stock she can switch to that for her itchy-skin allergies and get off the prednisone.

Awe, of course! I had finished a night of being up with my dog being sick and had just returned from the vet when I wrote that. I chased him around until about 4 a.m. cleaning up his messes until I finally resorted to putting him in his crate so I could sleep before I had to go to work. Then I couldn't sleep because I didn't want him getting sick in his crate and have to sit in it. 

Of course, he did not get sick again and was totally fine at the vet. Thank goodness I don't have kids. I have all the logic and reason in the world for adults, but let an animal or child be less than 100% for 12 hours or more and I lose all perspective!

So glad your pup is going to be ok!
