Long term disability through job

Long story short, I've been on short term disability. After X amount of weeks, it switches over to long term disability. All I know is that a new application will be sent to me and my doctors, it's still the same % of my pay, and LTD can go for up to X amount of months. Aside from that, I'm confused about what this means.

On STD I was reviewed every month, they requested doctors notes and updates. I have to stay on top of things to make sure I meet the deadlines. Would they continue with the reviews that often? How is LTD different, or is it just a technicality?

Appreciate any info!

  • Totally depends on the plan. Each plan is different so you'll need to speak with your HR or the 3rd party vendor if they use one.

  • Sorry what do you mean by 3rd party vendor? Is that the insurance co?
  • I'll answer the one question I can.  It varies by policy but, typically, an STD policy runs from usually 1-2 weeks after the disability through usually six months and then ends.  An LTD policy typically runs from 6 months AFTER the disability occurs.  That is typically the only difference.  The timeframes in which they run.

For example, at my work, we only have access to an LTD policy (weird, I know).  If I'm out of work for 3 months due do to a disability.  Too bad for me, I'd have no disability insurance to fall back on. Because the LTD policy wouldn't kick in until after I'd been disabled for 6 months.

  • Most plans are 90 days for LTD, and I do think the insurance carrier stays in touch to not only monitor the disability status, but see if there's any way you could go back to work even with a different occupation. I work at a broker's office doing group benefits so I'm a little familiar with it.

Thanks, I was going off the top of my head and did misquote.  My LTD is after 90 days also.
  • Thanks for all the replies. They are handled by a sep company so I was able to get that # and find out more info. I have an idea of what needs to be turned in now so I can make sure to look out for the forms in the mail
