NMMR-How I Met Your Mother (spoiler alert!)

Ok somebody chat with me about this. What did you think? It wasn't the way I hoped the series would end, but the more I think about it I do think it was true to the characters. I never really rooted for Ted and Robin, but maybe later in life was just the right time for them.

In any case, I couldn't stop crying last night. I really liked the mother and was hoping she wasn't going to die.

Re: NMMR-How I Met Your Mother (spoiler alert!)

  • Part of me loved it, yet hated it.  H and I both wanted Ted and Robin to be together.  Of course my H mentioned when Barney and Robin got divorced that the mother gets sick and dies and he remaries Robin.  Hey now dude, don't spoil it.

But from around the 2nd season we thought they would be together.

I liked the way they did it, but yet again they sort of went through many years of stuff within a very short amount of time and I wasn't caring for that.

  • I was disappointed.. it felt like they were finally evolving a little bit and it all went down hill. Barney turned it around again once he had his daughter, but Ted and Robin were so lame. Didn't feel like Tracy was the great "true love" that Ted always talked about. I'll miss Marshall and Lily- they're the best.

This is sort of where I'm at, except that I did like Tracy as a great love. She had two great loves in her life also, so I know that can happen. I just think that in real life these on again off again things rarely work out, so it bugs me that they do so frequently in TV and movies. I thought Ted and Robin had developed past that point.
  • I wished they had just let the whole Robin/Ted thing go. I didn't understand why until the end, but don't put the Mother up on this pedestal and have us fall in love with her, just to kill her off. (The Rebecca Gayheart character in 90210, if anyone remembers) I get where they were going, but the show should of ended several seasons back.

Also, one huge continuity error: In one of the earlier episodes it shows Ted waving to the Mother at the wedding on stage. Then in the final episode it shows him meeting her at the train stations.. I didn't get that and they didn't explain it.

But I still watched. I was just so in love with Lily and Marshall. Their relationship reminds me of me and my H (without the breakup drama).
  • Good catch Emily! I also wonder now who the "wife" is that he loses at his college reunion when he gets high. Robin? But that would make it a flash forward beyond the show's end. A sad hallucination? Why couldn't it just have been happy?
  • Did anyone else notice that Ted appears to go gray while the Mother never appeared to age.
  • It didn't bother MW or I.  Some of her friends, relatives had already guessed the ending.  I do agree with others that they could have spread out the last episode through the last few episodes.

I don't remember Ted waving to the mother ( but he certainly could have) while she was in the band, but they did show him looking at her last season.  He saw her for the first time at the wedding, but he wasn't introduced to her until the train station.

I also think the college reunion happened around 2020 so his wife would have been alive at that point.

Ted is around 6-7 years older than the mother and she died in 2024 so she would have been around 40 at that time.

I personally didn't like the ending. It felt forced and like they wanted a twist just for the sake of having a twist.  I also never felt like Ted and Robin were a good match for each other.  I mean maybe they would be ok for each other in the future, I don't know.  I understand the creators wanted the finale to be memorable, but I felt it was memorable for the wrong reasons.
