I saw the movie several years ago, so I already knew the basic plot. I thought the writing was unique, especially taking on such a heavy topic from a child's perspective. I rated it 4 stars, being generous.
Bruno was supposed to be 9. He should have been younger... much younger. I get that the author made him that age because he could wander around an unknown area by himself without supervision, but his complete and total obliviousness to everything, including mispronouncing important words, despite reading them, never hearing certain words, and asking people what certain words meant wasn't realistic. When he went to ask his sister what some words meant, she didn't know either, and she was supposed to be 12.
At 9, he would have already been indoctorinated completely, especially considering his father's status.
