Contractions Question...

So today's the first day where I've actually felt the need to start timing contractions.  They're not just tightening anymore, but they're not painful AF-like cramps.  They're somewhere in the middle.

I had a few while in the shower and several on my 30 minute drive to work.  I had pulled up my app and tried timing them and then it crapped out on me.  They were about 6-7 minutes apart on my drive in.

Since getting to work, I've downloaded a new app and have been keeping track for the last hour or so.  Each contraction is about 1-1 1/2 minutes.  My intervals are currently:  8 min, 9 min, 11.5 min, 10.5 min, 6 min, 4 min, 11 min, 10 min.  WTF?

I know these aren't worth calling the OB. Hell, I'm still at work and just fine.  I guess I'm just curious if this off the wall non-pattern is normal before things become actually regular.  Anyone experience something like this?

Re: Contractions Question...

  • Mine were closer together so I'm no help but I think it's going to be very soon that you meet LO.

    Eek, so exciting!!!
  • Sounds like it could be the beginning of labor to me.  Not to scare you, but my contractions never got to the point of 511 (5 min between, lasting 1 min, for 1 hr) they use to tell you to follow before coming in.  And they never had a consistent pattern.  When I decided to go in, it was because they were getting more painful and harder to deal with on my own and my H decided we should go -haha.

I worried the whole time that I'd be sent home.  But with both kids I was 4 cm along when I got there with a bulging bag of waters so they let me stay and like I said yesterday it's good I went in when I decided to because I had very quick labors.  The second time around, my nurse refused to leave the room and was calling people telling them to bring her things she needed.  I kept hearing her say, "she has a history of quick labor...."  I thought it was funny since I had only had one labor/delivery previously.

And looking at my app from when I went into labor with Zack, I started timing contractions at 5:18 pm and they were short, 20-30 s and ranged from 5-11.5 min, then they started increasing in length at about 8 pm, around 8:30 I had 6 contractions in a row less than 5 min that lasted a min, but they didn't keep up for an hour and petered out after that to every 7 min and shorter in length.

I finally left the house around 11 pm after having 6 contractions less than 5 min but they were all less than 1 min long.  Then once I got to the hospital, the contractions came one on top of the other for a while.

TL;DR - Just letting you know, it may not be as consistent as you're expecting, but you'll know when they get painful enough and when it's time to go.  But definitely sounds like the beginning of something.

  • Bobcee is wise. My contractions never were consistent. I went to the hospital when I was almost positive I wouldn't be sent home. By the time the nurse was checking me to see if I'd be admitted I was at 6cm, 8 with a contraction, and she kind of laughed because I had 3 right on top of each other before I got a break.

I would make sure your bag is packed, but wouldn't rush out.

  • @bobcee - That's GREAT to know!  I know everyone's labor is different and I don't want to assume that mine will be the picture perfect 5-1-1.  Thank you for sharing how different your experience was!  I will absolutely keep that in mind over the next couple hours!  So far, they're the same intensity (read: meh...nothing big).  But I'll make sure to head home if things start becoming more painful.  Thank you!

    @SweetC80 - You're silly.  :)

@alexisanna44 - Another one with inconsistent contractions?!  How have I not heard of this being more common?  Thank you for letting me know you had something similar!

Bag is basically packed...but I'm at work.  :)  I would need to go home first.  ;)

  • I'm another one who had inconsistent contractions.  I had 7 weeks of contractions with varying lengths (from 4 min to 15 min apart) but all low intensity.  I was on bedrest for the first 4 weeks until I was term.

Then the day things actually kicked in, I had my normal irregular low contractions, felt ill all morning and didn't get out of bed and then I felt a pop at 2pm.  Started barfing, contractions really started and I think they were varied between 4-7 min apart.  The main difference was the intensity.  No mistaking what was happening.  Got to the hospital at 4, I was 8cm.  An hour later I was 10.  An hour later he was born.

All that to say, I think intensity is better indicator of true labour so you are doing the right thing trying to distract yourself through it :)  Hopefully you are holding your baby by the weekend!

@JennaHack - I think we're on the same schedule.  I've been dealing with the same crap since 4am.  No rhyme or reason to them.

However, I will say that yours are closer together than mine.  I'll get mine close together, then they stop for awhile.  My last one was half an hour ago, and I'm getting one now...

  • eeekkk this is so exciting!!
  • I was just going to chime in about irregular contractions too.  My labor wasn't quite in the same category, because my water ended up breaking, and that's what sent me into the hospital.  But the two days before that happened, I was having irregular contractions - varying in length, and varying in frequency.

Be safe on that drive, and good luck!!!
