Dog Urine Deterrent That Works?!

So my husband and I have had our puppy for 2 years now...and had originally trained her to go on the puppy pad at the top of the stairs (when we are upstairs or sleeping, otherwise she goes outside if we are downstairs). She misses the pad sometimes but usually goes pretty faithfully on it. Even though we wash the carpet, over time, it has started to smell a little like urine (also I am very sensitive to smells). Now we are expecting a baby in July and I want to break the dog of peeing upstairs at all. My plan is to move the pad to the top of the stairs, then to the bottom. So far that worked but she also peed in the middle where the pad used to be.

Can anyone recommend a urine deterrent that actually works???? Thanks!

I think what you're asking for is a cleaner to remove all urine and it's odor. Nature's miracle is excellent. But chronic pee areas may need a professional cleaning/ replacement.

  • Thank you. I'm actually asking for a deterrent, a spray or powder that I can put on the area that will deter her from going there. I heard Nature's Miracle does not work that well but if others recommend it I will try it.

  • Natures Miracle is an excellent cleaner, but it is not meant to be a deterrent you are correct

If you are looking to stop peeing in the house I recommend trying to crate train at night and take out before you go to bed and as soon as she wakes up take her outside.  A deterrent is just going to change where she pees not stop her from peeing inside.

  • Ditto the Nature's Miracle recommendation - use it to clean any accidents (they also make a laundry boost if there's anything with pee on it that you can throw in the wash).  I would get rid of the pee pads entirely (they often just confuse the dog into thinking it's ok to potty inside, hence "missing" the pad sometimes), and housebreak her as if she was a puppy (take her out often, praise/reward like crazy when she potties outside, crate train her, crate her or tether her to you when you're in the house so you can watch for signs that she needs to go and whisk her outside immediately if she starts peeing in the house, etc.).  Especially once baby is mobile, you won't want pee pads sitting around for baby to grab/eat/tear/etc.  GL!
