Big boy bedroom

Hi Nesties! For those of you who I'm not friends with on Facebook, I'm pregnant. Among many things, this means that we're going to be shopping for a bedroom set for DS. I want to get him something solid that will last for years, but I'm also not looking to drop a ton of money. I love the style of Pottery Barn Kids' sets, but hoping to find something a bit lower priced.

Any recommendations from personal experience? Thanks!

Re: Big boy bedroom

  • Congrats on the baby! When's your due date? Are you guys still house shopping?

I like the Hemnes collection from Ikea. Unlike a lot of their products, this is actual solid wood and comes in different stains. We have several peices in our home office that we've had for 8+ years, and they have held up great.

We are planning on using that in our nursery. Thinking the white for a girl or the gray for a boy.

  • Congrats!!
  • Congrats!  I ditto the Hemnes furniture.  We have some of those pieces in DS's nursery and are happy with them- nice. sturdy pieces.  The plan is to build upon that as he gets older.

  • Hemnes is what we have in Danica's room for her and no complaints here.

  • @newqueen I tried updating my signature with that pic, but the stupid nest won't cooperate. I'm due October 19th. Thanks, everyone!

Can you add the pic to a post instead so we can see?

I'm 93 weeks pregnant now.  I've just resigned myself that I am never changing my ticker.  For what it's worth, some have said if you press save 607078940 times, that works.  It just hasn't worked for me.

  • I attached the picture in my reply...does it not come through?
  • I can see it! It's adorable!
  • Congrats!  Have you checked out American Signature?  I have always had good luck there.  Also, It seems like Craigslist often has Pottery Barn childrens sets for sale.

  • @onceinlovewithamy I haven't really looked anywhere yet (other than online), but I'll check out American Signature. And I know I need to keep an eye on Craigslist, I'm really just lazy about that. Thanks for the rec!
  • I'm not in the same boat with the furniture, but a mattress.  I can't say I've ever shopped for a mattress; totally clueless.  I really liked the sets they had at baby supermart near broomall, (I can't even guarantee that is the name, or location, but think it is close. How helpful am I, geez).  I remember they were a little more expensive than I wanted for a crib, but would consider for a regular bed/set.

  • I believe we have a trip to ikea in our near future as well. Report back with what you pick!
  • We have Ikea stuff in Oliver's big boy room. It's not solid wood, but we have the malm series (as well as an Expedit bookcase). We have another Malm bed in our guestroom that has held up amazingly well, and made it through two moves (so taking it apart, and putting back together twice). If you like the low-profile modern look, I recommend it!

  • Just in case anyone else is dealing with this conundrum, I thought I'd report back. We ended up going with the Catalina set from PBK. Not cheap, but not crazy expensive, and it's solid wood. We got it last week and it looks great, so hopefully it will hold up!

  • Looks great! That furniture should last him a very long time.

  • Love it!  That should last a very long time indeed.

  • @sju1982 @babe2331 I'm counting on it! That's why we ended up going with the full size bed instead of a twin. If we were going to spend the money on a set anyway, better to make it something he can use forever.
