  • 1. What age do you want to retire? Hoping to retire by 60.

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living? Does SAHM count? I am really hoping to be able to afford that.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis? We haven't used any of them in 3 months. I don't really feel like they are good or bad I just enjoy not having that bill at the end of the month.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver? I was a spender but I am proud to say I am officially a Saver!

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be? A new car. Ours is just getting old and beat up. I know we can get another year or two out of it but I hate the thought of putting a child in that car *shudder*

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it? Put it towards Student Loan debt!

  • 1. What age do you want to retire? I believe the earliest I can retire is 57, so 57!

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living? I would own a bar on the beach or work in an animal shelter.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis? I've been trying really hard not to. I've gotten back into the habit of paying them off every month with the exception of my big one ($1,800 balance), but I have gotten in the habit of paying on that one each pay check.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver? Currently a spender, but working towards becoming a saver. I really am so tired of living pay check to pay check so I'll be happy when I have a cushion again.

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be? I would buy granite countertops! Or finish paying for my wedding so our parents don't have to...

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it? At this moment I would pay for the flowers for my wedding, but ask me in 37 days and I'd put it towards my credit card balance of $1800.

  • 1. What age do you want to retire? Around 60, but maybe a littler earlier if posssible.

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living? I like what I do, but I'd love to be able to write for a living and or work with some non-profits that are close to my heart.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis?I use my rewards card to pay for a lot of things and get points, but that gets paid off every month now. I used to use it for everything and not pay it all down, when I was in college and bit me in the butt, so no more of that. :)

    4. Are you a spender or a saver? I'm the middle now--I used to take after my parents and be a huge spender but I'm much better about it now.

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be? My dream home on a lake, complete with a little boat in the garage and a barn (with horses)....Does that count? :)  Otherwise, I'd love to do Lasik so I don't have to deal with wearing contacts/glasses all the time!

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it? I would try my hand at investing in the stock market. I'm scared to lose my money but if someone just gave me some cash to play around with, I wouldn't feel too bad if I lost some of it.

  • 1. What age do you want to retire?  60

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living? Travel professionally.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis? Not anymore.  We used to though.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver? Used to be a saver, but now that we're doing TMM I'm almost a spender.  Mostly because I realized how much I really like shopping.  But now it's done in a different way.

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be? A house in the country.

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it?  Tithe 10%, spend $100 on a raised garden bed, and put the rest toward our next student loan.

  • 1. What age do you want to retire?

Ideally, around 50.  It can be done if we're willing to give up good incomes, so I think being mentally prepared to part with our incomes is going to be our biggest challenge, rather than saving the money to actually do it.  H also gets bored really easily, so he'll probably always work a little bit just to entertain himself.  We've talked about buying a condo in Europe in our 50's/60's - some place that either has a hub for low cost airlines or is a rail hub so that we can travel to other countries once we're over there - and then doing 6 months there, 6 months here and working part-time remotely.  H is actually a dual citizen and holds an EU passport, so he can work in the EU if necessary.  It sounds like a pipe dream, but it's actually something we're getting more serious about.

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living?

I would work as an undergraduate writing consultant.  I did this part-time in college and absolutely loved it.  I really loved everything about it, except the lousy pay.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis?

I only use credit cards.  I like the consumer protection it gives me, I like that they act as a cushion between stores and my bank account, and I am getting to be an extreme points-earner (is that a thing?).  Sort of like an extreme couponer, but with credit card points. At the end of March I had earned more than $300 in credit card points in 2014, just by being strategic with which card I use.  I also get extra cash back by using ebates and fatwallet religiously.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver?

I'm naturally a spender, but I hate to part with money.  It's a bit of a problem.  So I'm a spender when it comes to bargains.  Otherwise, I'm a saver when there are no bargains to be had.

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be?

Probably a house.  Otherwise, a horse, barn, tack, and a (hired) person to take care of it...

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it?

Put it toward student loan debt or else a new mattress.

    1. What age do you want to retire?

I'm 26 now, so it's hard to project out 30-40 years. I don't know that I'll ever fully retire, I think maybe around 55 I'll try to cut to a strict less than 40 hours a week, and continue to cut back to part-time

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living?

I'm really lucky, exactly what I'm doing, but probably part-time

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis?

    Yes.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver?

I'm a spender. But, I can save when I need to

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be?

    My dream house

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it?

Spend it on a weekend with friends in Boston or NYC

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living? Wildlife photographer

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis? Yes but only one. Our AmEx for big purchases to get the points.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver? Saver...so much a saver...

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be? I would buy a house outright!

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it? DO I *have* to spend it or is saving an option? If I have to spend....I would get some new furniture...All of ours is basically from IKEA and falling apart.

  • 1. What age do you want to retire? I am hoping 55-60.

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living? I would be a school bus driver. I used to be one and I will become one again once our future children all go to elementary school. I can't wait to do that again.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis? Yes, we have 2 airlines cards that we use. We pay them off either weekly or every other week. We love to travel, so we are trying to get free flights. I wouldn't use a cc if this wasn't the case.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver? I guess I am a spender, but I have been really good at being a saver. I know if I didn't have goals I would be a spender.

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be? A house! Definitely!

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it? I would put it straight into savings for a house. If I couldn't save it, I would add it to my budget to Las Vegas next month. There are things I'd love to do that I don't want to spend my money on haha.

  • 1. What age do you want to retire?

I haven't really thought about this even though I'm probably one of the older folks on the board.  As long as I find the work interesting and engaging, I would like to keep doing it at least part time as long as I am able.

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living?

It's not so much the money that's holding me back, but my dream job would be to be a professor at a good liberal arts college.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis?

    For every purchase I can.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver?

I'm a saver, but when I do spend money I'm often willing to pay a premium for quality

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be?

Does a vacation count?  I'd like to spend a month or more in India.

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it?

Probably just put it in savings.  If I had to spend it for some reason, I would put it towards a porch swing.

  • 1. What age do you want to retire? 60

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living? I would be an architect, but I really think I would like to be a SAHM and actually have more time to work on my business.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis? We are trying to cut back significantly, but I do have one that I use maybe once a month, and DH has one that he limits his spending on. We did recently go shopping crazy on baby items...

    4. Are you a spender or a saver? I am a mix of both. I like to spend when I need to, but I hate parting with money. So I spend when it's a great deal, but save the rest.

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be? A house.

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it? I would put it towards my credit card, if not, I would put it away in my DP fund.

Our plan is to travel.  All over the world and in a car through the states.

We also have a goal to have a vacation home bought and paid for before 40.  So we would likely split our time between here and there, or retire fully there.   My parents would split the cost of this with us, and are planning to retire there.  So we would actually probably help take care of them some at that point.

But our plan is to also put more than 15% into retirement so we can make this happen.

We would travel too.  My bucket list for places to visit is miles long.  I once spent a whole weekend dreaming up my "fantasy trip through Europe."  Even without researching anything, I came up with about 2 years of stuff to see if we just traveled from one place to another, spending 3-4 days in most places and up to 2 weeks in the very large cities.  So that's 2 years with no breaks and no research.  I find that when I start to research I start to find more things I want to see.

I would also like to visit all 50 states.  I've been to 25.  H has been to 28.

And that doesn't even touch South America and Asia.  Those places are probably even more amazing but take more planning because the tourism infrastructure just isn't as good.

And finally, I really REALLY want to circumnavigate the globe on a cruise.  Actually, I want to "cruise hop" one-way cruises and spend extra time in locations that are starting and end points for various itineraries (Anchorage, Beijing, Cairo, Venice, etc.).  I would love to take 6-12 months to do this one day.

H and I are going to make an effort to travel our whole lives - including after we have children (whether we take them with us is a question we'll answer later) - but it's really hard for us to go anywhere for longer than 10 days in a row with the jobs we have right now.  We might be able to squeeze out a few 2-week trips between now and retirement, but we're going to have to save some of the big stuff for retirement.

traveling is awesome I agree.  Our goal is to have a vacation rental in hawaii.  We stay there half the year and rent it out half the year.  OR we build a couple little vacation rental cottages and live there on the property.

See this is what I'm talking about.  H and I are seriously SERIOUSLY thinking about doing a true cruise around the world to kick off retirement.  And then we might do the slower one where we cruise hop one-way ships later, or else just cruise hop in our favorite regions.

I mean... doesn't that sound amazing?  You unpack once.  You travel while you sleep.  You go to places that are impossible to get to otherwise.  And you change time zones slowly.  It's basically perfect.

    ***STUCK IN THE BOX
There's a lot to be said for this plan.  Our thoughts on buying a condo in Europe are similar.  Vacation rentals owned by Americans actually rent for more over in Europe because people assume you a) aren't shady and b) keep the vacation rental up to American "standards" (big beds, American-sized fridges, etc.).  I think a 50-50 split probably means you break even on what it costs to own the property, plus it makes your own travel much less expensive.

This is a dream for us. However, the cheapest tickets are $50k per person.  That does not include drinks or gratuity for the 180 days.

Our incomes likely won't allow us to spend like this in retirement, but we aren't removing it from our dream list.

  • Stuck in the Box!

Now that we've finally started to get some "regulars" around this board again.  Let's do a GTKY (Get To Know You).  I'll keep them Money related.

    1. What age do you want to retire?

I'd love to retire at 60, but I don't think we'll be able to.  We're already so behind!

    2. If money weren't an issue, what would you do for a living?

Either what I do now part time, or in my wildest dreams I'd be a divemaster (SCUBA diving guide) in some crazy tropical location.

    3. Do you use credit cards on a regular basis?

Yes-we are working our card for the points, and will open up a better rewards card once we've bought a house.

    4. Are you a spender or a saver?

In between.  I'm a saver in some big ways (I hate shopping, I hate spending money on meh food out of convenience) and a spender in others (I love travelling and spending money on GOOD food).

    5. If you could buy 1 thing right now (no matter the cost), what would it be?

Boring answer-our house!  Fun, impractical answer-a spotting scope for birding.

    6. You were just given $500 to spend. What would you do with it?

It would go right into our DP fund.

Let me introduce you to vacationstogo.com.  You can buy cruises around to world for about $20K each.

So by then... $40K=cruise around the world for two or the cost of one semester at my former alma mater.  I know which I would take.

OMG!!! I can't believe I haven't heard of this before... thanks!! Now I have something else on my travel to do list!
    Anniversary
  • I actually have a co-worker who cruises all the time (relatively speaking).  It her and her husband's preferred method of travel.  She's been on all of the very expensive cruise lines.  She says that by far the cruise line with the nicest ships is Disney.  They want on a Disney cruise for their 10th anniversary... without their child.  And she's not a Disney nut at all.
