The People in the Trees questions (NS)

I can't remember if this recommendation came from NBC or from someone on my BMB, but some of you guys must have read it, right?  I just started it last night, so I'm only about 25 pages in so far.

It says its a novel, so I know it's fiction, but is it based on a true story?  In reading GR reviews, it seemed almost like people were reviewing it as non-fiction by the level of appalled-ness that I was getting from a lot of the reviews.  Some people seemed to think the writing was brilliant, but still wish they hadn't read it because it was so disturbing.  But it's fiction, right?

I generally enjoy books that are a little twisted (Chuck Palahniuk and Ian McEwan are two of my favorite authors, and A Clockwork Orange and Lolita rank among my favorite books), and this sounded like it would be right up my alley, but I'm just looking for some more input, I guess.
