How do you save for travel?

We are going to NC in September for 9 days and are in the process of saving money to just "blow" while we are there. What does everyone do to save money for vacations? We opened a separate savings account and put money in that specifically for vacation, but I'm not thrilled with doing that. Any suggestions that work for you? Thanks!

Re: How do you save for travel?

  • I take $50-100 each paycheck once the vaca is booked and put it aside!

Be sure to follow The Nest on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest!
  • We usually plan our vacations well in advance, so once we have something in mind we will just start throwing money into our vacation fund (the amount varies per pay period). But lately, I think we are going to start throwing money in the account with every paycheck we get just so were not scrambling to afford a vacation, it will also help us save towards the bigger ones we want to take.

I have a line item in my monthly budget for Travel. It's right there next to savings, housing, groceries, dining, medical, pets, etc.

It all goes into the same account (besides savings, which goes into high interest) and I just categorize each expense on my monthly statement. Since my travel expenses fluctuate wildly month to month (e.g. I might buy plane tickets and pre-pay for a hotel one month and then spend nothing the next and then spend a bunch on restaurants and transit when I'm on the trip), I keep a monthly average.

I never come up with a specific amount to "blow." I just decide what restaurants and activities are worth it and will really add to the trip. Especially since the amount will vary wildly by place! I might spend hundreds of dollars on adventure activities in Iceland, or I might be indulging in $12 massages in China. It all gets averaged out.

  • I have a portion of my paycheck direct deposited into a bank account that is designated just for travel.  DH and I love to travel, so this method works best for us.  We add the same amount every paycheck year round.
  • We put money in a travel savings account every month. I think our travel savings has averaged around $600/month.

But we don't "blow" money when we are on vacation. We are still very cost conscious when we travel. Travel is expensive no matter what, but there's a wide range in how expensive that can be.
  • Anytime I get a $5 bill in my possession, I throw it into a vacation jar.  When I go on vacation, that's the money I take with.

Also do this with spare change.  Went to Vegas and the money I spent on gambling all came from a change jar.

  • It's not spam or non-sense. We are a real family trying to figure things out just like everyone else. It's an addition tool uses to answer the question, which was: How do you save for travel? My answer in this video not only included budget but explains how everyone can get up to $300 worth of additional savings when traveling to a location.
Why didn't you just post a synopsis of the budgeting info here? Some people have YouTube blocked on their work computers.

By starting two brand new threads that simply link to your videos and mentioning them in nearly every single one of your replies, it comes across as pretty spammy.

I haven't watched any of the videos (work restrictions) but what does it have to do with shopping at Pier One? Is that part of the travel budgeting?

Why does practically every post you do have a video attached?  Are you trying to get hits on your videos?  Nobody wants to watch a 9 minute video to get travel saving tips.  A few written sentences will convey your message much better.  Something is fishy.
  • Thanks for your input. Clearly I am a life vlogger. To each their own. For those who have in-boxed thanking me for the information.. You are most welcome! (-; P.S you can always skip over my post.

That's fine.  But you cannot use this forum to get hits for your "vlogging" to make money.  Soliciting is not allowed here.
  • Thanks for your reply Joan E2012. You are overly paranoid. The more you comment on this post the more you draw attention to it, and not the original question that we simply answered with a video response. Your the only one soliciting on this page. It's borderline harassment. Anyone who knows anything about marketing knows that the more you comment about a post draws more attention to what you don't want attention to be drawn to. I don't need solicitation by your replies. I'm simply on here to answer a question in my own way. I've made 10 comment on here with no videos. The only thing on here that's sounds fishy is you.

First, no, she's not soliciting. She is not asking anyone to do anything other than review your posting pattern, since it matches that of people who are using the forums for advertising purposes (which violates the ToS). She is suggesting that your posts be reviewed for compliance. That is nowhere near harassment.

Second, I'm guessing that thing about 10 comments is a typo? You have made 10 comments on here with videos:

    Six contain an embedded video:

At the moment you have posted 15 times, which leaves only 5 comments with no videos. And 3 of those 5 are in this thread. The statistics are in JoanE2012's favor here.

I stand by my assertion that you should put more of the information in your posts instead of just linking to your videos. It will be a lot more helpful, and it will look a lot less like you're just posting to drum up traffic for another website.

  • Look at all the spam that Gilli C posted please block her from posting all these videos on one feed. To prove her own agenda.
  • Here are a few rules Gilli C and JoanE 2012 are breaking. No harassing, intimidating, stalking, or threatening other community members. No libelous, defamatory, or otherwise tortiuous language. No online vandalism. This includes using abusive language and repeatedly hitting the return key in the chat room, or otherwise acting in a manner that negatively impacts the ability to engage in real time exchanges. No invasion of another's privacy. No manipulation or forging of identifiers in order to disguise the origin of any information posted on The Knot site or otherwise provided to The Knot or its employees. No posting, providing, transmitting, or otherwise making available any information (such as inside, proprietary or confidential information) that you do not have a right to make available due to contract, fiduciary duty, or operation of law. No posting, providing, transmitting, or otherwise making available any junk mail or spam. No posting, uploading, emailing, or otherwise transmitting any material that contains any malicious computer code (including spyware, worms, Trojan horses, viruses, etc.). No collecting, storing, or posting of personal data about or of other community members. No soliciting of any kind on the message boards or in the chat room. Your the only one on here that is breaking rules. I have chosen to leave this site. You two are ridiculous. Yes I called and asked to be removed. My integrity is worth more than your ignorance.
  • Please provide specific examples of the rules you claim I'm breaking.  Did you really just copy the TOS without reading them?

Calling you out on your posting behavior does not break any rules.  It's a public forum and by way of posting here, you open yourself up to responses.  You cannot dictate what people can and cannot respond to.  That's not the way it works.

  • It's evident that you didn't read them. Are you blind? Again you didn't call me out on anything. You just got called out ! You are harassing me because I chose a video post to answer the question. Your are the worst administrator this page can have. I'm sure the poor girl wishes she never asked the question due to your constant nagging (harassment) over my video response. Your the only one trying to dictate my response, and that not the way it works here!

You throw around the word harassment because I questioned why nearly every post of yours links to a video?   Ummm, ok.   I stand by my original statement that something is fishy.  It's no secret that vloggers try and earn money on YouTube.  Soliciting for that is not allowed here.  Plain and simple.
  • Again harassment..
  • That was a joke! :) ...right?! :-/

  • When we are in the planning stages of a trip we create a budget for the trip and then create a monthly amount that needs to be saved so we'll have enough for the trip when we leave. We include spending money as well as trip expenses and activities.
  • Hey Sembree1,

There are many great suggestions already in this thread – opening up a separate account to deposit money each month certainly helps, because otherwise that money usually gets spent on the “little things” (at least in our family) :)

As for saving money, I think the best approach is to cut out the essentials – don’t drive your car everywhere, eat at home more, and perhaps cut back on that Starbucks coffee. Basically, anything that is not absolutely necessary for your family’s well-being and quality of life can be cut down.

This approach certainly worked for us – we were able to go on a beautiful trip in Australia, and stay at a spectacular luxury resort (http://www.alistguide.com.au/venues/nsw/regional-nsw/bar/pullman_resort_magenta_shores.html). If you want the perfect place to stay within reaching distance of Sydney, this is the place :)

Anyway, all the best of luck to you on your trip!
