Mrs. Dalloway SBC reread

I reread Mrs. Dalloway for the reread category in the SBC.

I first read it my senior year of high school, way back in 1999. I liked it a lot then.

This time, I actually started reading it aloud to my baby, which really was helpful. It is difficult reading so going slow by reading it aloud was a good idea. I liked it this reread. I remembered a great deal of it.

The book is set in 1922. It's the day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a London high society woman, who is hosting a party. Her story is paralleled by the story of a WWI vet who commits suicide due to the misunderstood PTSD. At the time PTSD was thought of as shell shock, and people didn't receive the help they needed.
Can I marry them all?

Re: Mrs. Dalloway SBC reread

  • I've never read this but I have it on audio so I'm glad to hear you say that it helps to hear it read aloud.
  • I read it in college and had such a hard time getting through it and ended up not really liking it because of this. I'm glad you liked it as a reread, though, and maybe I should just give it another try.

"People talk about escapism as if it's a bad thing... Once you've escaped, once you come back, the world is not the same as when you left it. You come back to it with skills, weapons, knowledge you didn't have before. Then you are better equipped to deal with your current reality."
