Suggestions for painting a wood-veneer fireplace?

We're repainting our front rooms in our house, and one of our focal pieces was an electric fireplace in cherry veneer. With the new colors we've chosen, it looks "off." Rather than trying to sand and stain the veneer and having a potential mess depending on how deep it is, I'm considering just painting it. I thought I would turn to the ladies of  The Nest for some advice. I can't seem to find anything I like online. Any ideas? Please excuse the mess... the whole room is still a work in progress. :)

(And eventually we'll get around to recovering the chairs too...)

  • @egad1980 - Give it a light sanding and rough up the texture a little bit then use a good primer (I like Sherwin Williams primer, but Behr or Valspar works too). You don't need to really get down deep, but the light sanding will help the primer adhere better since the veneer is usually so slick.

They also sell liquid sanders for this purpose, but personally I have never found they worked well.

Once it's primed you should be able to paint it just like you would any other piece of furniture or a wall.
