Potato and Wheat Intolerance

I have recently discovered through the help of a naturopath that I am intolerant to potato and wheat.  I was surprised to find out just how many products a potato intolerance effects.  Potato is hidden in almost all commercial dairy products, baking powder, baking soda and a bunch of other products.  I am feeling quite overwhelmed by the news and am having trouble coming up with alternatives to the foods that I love.  The boyfriend and I eat a lot of meals involving wraps or breads, and cheese!

Is anyone else potato and/or wheat intolerant? Does anyone have some alternative recipes that would fit my new dietary restrictions? Any help is appreciated!

Re: Potato and Wheat Intolerance

  • I don't know anyone with a potato issue but I've been allergic to wheat since I was 4 years old.  I'm glad you've gone to a naturopath- they will get you on the right track and help heal your body after years of operating with intolerances.

I bake all the time and I always use oat flour as a substitute.  Now that H is GF, we use GF oat flour.  You need to add xantham gum to almost all recipes (brownies are the only exception) to keep things from falling apart.  A lot of GF items are made with rice flour- I'm allergic to rice, so that doesn't work for me.  Try using rice noodles and rice crisps.  Go to a natural food market and look at all the GF products.

Do all baking powders and baking soda have potato starch?  Have you found some brands that don't?  Yes, a lot of dairy products do have them- try using organic.  You're going to end up eating much healthier in the long run.
