Help with front closet

Hey everyone!

I'm new here. Hope to get some ideas for organizing my front closet. As you can see it's not very deep and the shoe racks we have are terrible so it's always a giant mess. On the inside of the closet, there are hooks and I guess they work okay but I need a better way of cleaning it up. Any ideas? I was thinking of putting one of those canvas shoe organizers but that's all I can think of. TIA! I'm sorry but the images are rotated and I can't fix it. *sigh* what a newb.

Re: Help with front closet

  • Is there any way that you could remove the mirrored doors and put in two doors that open instead? That would give you a lot more storage options, as you could then add hooks to the backs of the doors, or even put the canvas shoe organizers on the back of the doors. I think keeping a boot tray on the floor for wet or muddy shoes is smart, but have a canvas pocket hanger for dry shoes that way they don't clutter the floor or get lost in the back of the closet.
Having the two doors would also make things a lot more accessible and actually update the appearance of your entry too. They aren't very hard to install, and would cost you about $60 for the doors and the hardware you would need.
  • You could also try a storage system. The Elfa system at the Container Store is the premier system and one benefit if it is its ease of installation. However, you can buy less-costly systems at DIY stores like Home Depot.

Go to the Container Store website for ideas.

I think your main issue is that you are not effectively being able to use your vertical space in your current layout.

  • What about baskets for each person in the house where they could just dump their shoes in? This way you only have to look your basekt for your shoes. They won't be all nice on display, but at least you only have to dump out your basket of shoes to get the pair you want & then just throw the others all back into the basket.
  • Hi! New here, saw this thread, and couldn't resist jumping in. Had the same problem with an old closet. Brother helped me pull out the sliding door, and install two doors in its place. The "bay doors" made it much easier to see what was inside the closet, and allowed me to step inside when I needed to organize its contents.

We couldn't find low shelves that would fit into the space, so we built them ourselves, in order to house the footwear. Wish we'd taken a picture, but it almost looked like this, without the low coat hanger on the left - http://storganizationblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/coatCloset.jpg
