SBC: Book you haven't read in a while: These Happy Golden Years (NS)

So yesterday I finished a book I'd been reading all last week, and was looking for something else to read when I saw my Little House books on my shelf. It's been so long since I've read them, I decided to re-read These Happy Golden Years. It's always been my favorite one, and I've read my copy so many times it's falling apart.  It didn't disappoint.
I loved it every bit as much as all the other times I've read it. I loved putting myself on the prairie and thinking what it would be like to have lived then. Wishing I had a brown poplin dress like Laura, and how fun it would be to go for sleigh rides with Almanzo.
Reading that book again was like going home. Like catching up with an old friend you haven't spoken with in ages - happy and full of warmth and love.

  • Whenever I am sick, I re-read Little House in the Big Woods.  Nothing but comfort!

  • I think I need to put this series on my wish list. I haven't read them in so long and my copies are long gone.

This is my favorite in the series too!

  • I think Little House may have been my very first book series. Laura and Almanzo's courtship is still my favorite.

The Little House books are the first series I can really remember reading and loving, too. I offered them to my niece to read when she was here visiting two weekends ago (she's 10) and she said they sounded boring. It hurt my heart a little bit.

  • I purchased the series a couple years ago to have for the girls (I destroyed the copies from my childhood) & re-read the series.  My favorites are still The Long Winter & These Happy Golden Years!
  • As I am a huge nerd, one summer about 5 years ago I went on a Laura Ingalls Wilder kick and read everything I could find about her.  It was interesting to see what some of the stories were and how she had adapted/ changed the stories for her books.

I absolutely LOVED these books. I went as Laura for Halloween in 3rd grade and on one of my family's cross country trips I INSISTED on visiting her house and grave.

This is a series I can't wait to share with future kids.

  • I almost ordered the 9-book box set today, but I am holding off. I feel like that will be the perfect use of a bookstore GC someday.

    I used a groupon!  :)
  • Yeah, so I ordered the boxed set. I am weak. I can't wait to start reading them again! And I don't think I ever read Farmer Boy, so that one will be new to me!

  • And now I'm going to have to do a reread too.
