Reading Lottery: The Girl You Left Behind (no spoilers)

I recently finished reading The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes for the reading lottery. From the GR synopsis:

"In 1916, French artist Edouard Lefevre leaves his wife Sophie to fight at the Front. When her town falls into German hands, his portrait of Sophie stirs the heart of the local Kommandant and causes her to risk everything - her family, reputation and life - in the hope of seeing her true love one last time.

Nearly a century later and Sophie's portrait is given to Liv by her young husband shortly before his sudden death. Its beauty speaks of their short life together, but when the painting's dark and passion-torn history is revealed, Liv discovers that the first spark of love she has felt since she lost him is threatened…"

I really enjoyed this book. I have had Me Before You by the same author on my TBR for awhile but I don't read a lot of historical fiction and this book was not on my radar. I am so glad I read it though; I loved reading about Sophie's life and was drawn into her world right away. My only complaint would be that I had a harder time getting into Liv's storyline, I flew through the sections about Sophie and the Liv sections went much slower at first. I did really get invested in her story toward the end, it just took awhile to hook me.

I think the thing I appreciated most about this book was how three-dimensional all of the characters were; even the antagonists were sympathetic in some way. It was a beautifully written book and I will definitely be checking out more by this author! Thank you to whoever recommended it!

This one is on my TBR list, also! I had borrowed the ebook from my library but didn't get to it before my loan was up. Time to put myself back on the wait list!
