QOTD 5/21

eBay of all places has done a survey of what people are willing to do for X dollars.

So how much money would you want to do the following things:

1. Give up Facebook
2. Give up music for a year
3. Take a vow of silence for a year
4. Live with 50 cats for a year

Here is a link to the survey with what the survey says.

Re: QOTD 5/21

  • I could probably do 3 of those 4 things, but they would all be unpleasant and/or really inconvenient, so it would have to be worth my while. If they paid off my student loans (a little under 50k), I'd do it.

I'm saying no to the vow of silence, though. I would literally not be able to work for a year if I couldn't speak.

  • I would only give up facebook.  To do it temporarily, probably $1000.  Forever, it would be much higher.  Reason being that it's a good way to keep in touch with family who are far away.

  • I would go completely insane if I did any of these.

Giving up FB would be extremely hard.  We do the majority of our farm sales/advertising from FB.

Facebook: I was going to say I could give it up for free, but like @seipel12 I use it for business so I'd have calculate potential loss of income to come up with a price I could live with.

Music: I'd say 10k...then I could pay off my student loan and make a dent in our mortgage

    Silence: couldn't do it!

Cats: maybe $1000 to cover the cost of food...I love cats though

  • This is a strange one!! I don't know!

Facebook: I've been on FB since college but it's kind of annoying now. So maybe. $2000 for the yr, but I don't think I'd want to give it up forever

Music: I couldn't!! I listen to music all day at work. My pandora wasn't streaming one day and I had to hunt down and start using Spotify! No amount of money for that one.

Silence: this one would be so hard. I think I could do it for a large amount, like $50k if I also got technology that could speak for me. If I could have a personal computer to type what I want to say, I could do it.

Cats: 50?!!!! I probably couldn't do this one. The house would smell like pee and I just wouldn't want to. Ok, maybe $50k if I got a huge house and biweekly house cleaners! Haha

  • I gave up facebook about 4 years ago so that doesn't matter to me.

I don't think that I could do the music or vow of silence. As for the cats, I would have to say at least $500k plus expenses for food, litter, vet etc. I would use for of the money I got to probably gut the house and redo it.

  • Hmmm...

Facebook: Recently, I've been annoyed with FB. I do like it to keep in touch with my family in Italy though. Maybe $25K for the year.

Music: This would be really hard! I'd need at least $1 Million for the year!

    Silence: I don't think I could do.

Cats: Absolutely not! H and I are NOT cat people...and 50 of them, NO WAY!

  • 1. Give up Facebook - For a year? $5000. Forever, $25,000. It's how we communicate with so many friends and family.

    2. Give up music for a year - $5000. I don't do shit for free!

    3. Take a vow of silence for a year - $100,000. It'll cover my lost income for the year and the income I lose while looking for a new job after being jobless for a year.

    4. Live with 50 cats for a year - $1,000,000. I need a new giant house, live in cat car, and whole house air purifying system since I'm allergic.

  • Facebook: Out of these four, this one would be the easiest to give up.  So, $5 or $10k would be sufficient.

Music: I wouldn't want to give this up.  Not only because I like listening to music while working or at home, but also because we live in a city where there is always live music.  So, we'd have to stay home all the time.  I would definitely need serious compensation for this, probably $500k or something!

Silence: This would not even be a slight possibility for me.  No way could I stop talking!

Cats: I like cats and all, but there is no way in heck I'd have 50 cats in my house.  Now, if I could buy/build a shelter for them, employ staff, and have food and other necessities provided, I'd only want enough to cover all those expenses.

  • I think the only ones I'd willingly do are the Facebook one and the vow of silence. I honestly only use FB to keep in touch with friends and relatives. And I'm naturally an introvert. Quietness is easy for me.

The way my allergies are, you couldn't pay me enough for the cat thing. And music is such a big part of my life. I could never give it up.
