We had an outdoor pipe freeze and burst over the winter, unbeknownst to us until we turned on the outdoor sprinkler this weekend and the water came gushing into our finished basement. Fortunately we caught it in like 5 minutes so only a large swath of carpet and drywall was flooded. We called our insurance (USAA) and they immediately sent in a water remediation team that cut out all the carpet and set up industrial dryers to dry up the drywall/ceiling. They had to tear out about half of the trim and baseboard to access the wet spots. USAA immediately approved coverage of the pipe repair, because the freezing was an "act of god", and are now considering the "rebuild" repair.
Anyone had experience with this? It seems like it could be a windfall for us, so I'm trying to not get my hopes up. For example, we DIY'd everything about 6 years ago and we did a poor job. The carpet was cheap and stained. The baseboard was cheap and done without a mitre saw. We'd like to replace the carpet with ceramic tile. Nothing fancy, but I'd like someone else to do it because we suck at DIY. I'm just curious how they determine how much the carpet is worth, or if there is a standard amount?
TIA!
