Need to purchase a Counter-Depth refrigerator for our new home…

We are currently building a home with Maronda homes and they recently installed the kitchen cabinets.

We purchased a 27cu side by side fridge and the width of the fridge is about 35 and a half.  There is wall/entry way to the left of the fridge that takes you to the dining room.  If I measure from the wall to the cabinet edge there is 36 inches for the width but since they installed a baseboard on the wall and on the cabinet we have 34 and half inches width.

From my understanding you need to have at least an inch on each side of the refrigerator so the doors will open properly because of the handles etc…

So I got my money back for the 27cu refrigerator and now I’m looking at getting a counter-depth fridge which is 33inch in width.  I’m thinking it’s going to be a lot cheaper because its 22.9cu but after looking them up they are way more expensive and smaller.  What the heck!

Do you think If I remove both base boards there will be enough clearance to open both fridge doors?  The right door will be fine because it will stick out from the counter.  I’m worried about the left door because of the wall.  Maybe a French-door fridge might be better?

  • I think side-by-side will actually be better. You use your fridge side more than you do the freezer side, so I think having the freezer door hit the wall is better than one of the french fridge doors. And I don't think that removing the 1/2" of baseboard on each side will make a difference in the sizing. Also, if your fridge doors will stick out in front of the countertop on the right side, you don't need to have the 1" clearance on that side, which then will give you extra space against the wall so the door can open slightly more.
  • We ended up getting a LG Side by Side fridge.  The french door one I wanted was double the cost of the side by side.  I could not justify the extra cost for it.

    We got the fridge below:
