Is this Thank You acceptable?

Hi everyone

May I clarify something please?

If someone hands you a gift for something but you don't have time to open it right then and there- is it acceptable to thank them for the unopened gift and leave it at that?

I ask this because a family member gave me a gift and I said thanks but did not have time to open it.

A few weeks later she contacted me asking if I had received it ok/liked it and I told her I already thanked her. Needless to say she responded that if I didn't like or want her gifts, she wouldn't bother me with anymore again.

What do you think of this?

Thanks so much everyone

Re: Is this Thank You acceptable?

  • So she called you up asking if you liked it and your response was " I already told you thank you."  Yes, that is rude and her response is nicer than mine would have been.

I read your other response about your friend and I have to say that you need to start treating people better.  You come across as a very self absorbed person that has little consideration for others.

  • If it were me, I would have still thanked her after once you found out what it was. Saying thank you before receiving it doesn't give her any information about if you actually enjoyed the gift.

I really hope you're just a troll trying to rile people up.  Because, like the PP said, if you aren't - you come across as VERY self absorbed with no concept about how you come across.

  • I think you need to start cutting all these blood sucking emotional black holes out of your life. Seriously, who needs friends who have the nerve to get sick when you're trying to be happy and other people trying to make sure you liked the gift they carefully selected for you.

You didn't have time to open the gift while with this person (clearly you must have been performing life saving CPR or saving a puppy from a fire), but you took enough time out of your busy schedule to say, "uh, thanks". Who the hell do they think they are calling to bother you...when you are so terribly busy...to see if you liked the gift once you found the time to open it.

You would be doing EVERYONE a favor to pare down your circle of friends. You clearly do not have the time or patience to deal with these pesky do gooders.

You should select your friends more carefully. Choose people more like yourself. Ya know...people who act annoyed when you call or act unappreciative when you go out of your way for them. I'm sure they don't mean it that way...they are just really busy and have their own lives. Those are the friends who would truly "get" you.
  • Seriously? You respond by telling her you had already thanked her..? Yeah. That was very rude, and you would indeed never get anything more from me but a grumpy smirk. Might want to rethink that and apologize to her. That would hurt my feelings if someone told me that...
  • DS received a nice Nike outfit from his aunt. I took a picture of him wearing it and texted it to her with a thank you. I felt a bit bad about that since it wasn't a written note. So I thank YOU because now I don't feel bad at all.

Haha! Yeah, your thank you is perfectly spot on...OP's, not so much...
  • You do not have to open the gift in front of her, but thanking her when she hands it to you is not enough.  You must send a proper thank you note.  That's the correct thing to do regardless of whether you opened it in front of her or not.
