Does making a claim on a my renter's insurance from Farmer's create more issues?

We recently had an unfortunate break-in at our apartment.  It was actually a really sloppy job and they stole some of the weirdest things, however, some of the items were pretty valuable.

We currently use Farmer's for our renter's insurance and we have not gotten around to filing a claim due to another unfortunate event... it has been a rough few days.  My goal is to get something over to them before the end of the week and considering it is a holiday weekend, I do not expect a prompt response.  I believe the police report should be available for us to get to, but we need to make time to get up to the station and get a copy.

So here are my questions...

  1. When filing a claim, how long does it normally take for a response from Farmer's?
  2. Obviously all policies are different pending on what you are paying, but how successful were you on getting money back?  What is the turnaround time?
  3. Is renter's insurance similar to car insurance?  For example, when you get in an accident or get a ticket, your car insurance goes up.  Is this the same concept for renter's insurance?
  4. Due to the break-in, this has advanced our timeline in looking for a house.  We were going to wait until the end of 2015 to move into a house, however, current events has us rushing that timeline.  If we were to get a house and apply for homeowner's insurance, whether it be through Farmer's or another agency, would that affect our polices?  Again, going back to car insurance, any accidents or tickets will affect any future policies with the same or different agencies.  Is this the same thing?
I have had a couple of run ins with the car insurance which is why I keep using it as an example.  I am not sure if most insurance agencies work the same in all regards, but any information you have would be great.

Thanks Nesties!
