PA PowerSwitch??

Recently a neighbor approached me about PAPowerSwicth (Ambit Energy ) and had asked if I had an interest in switching. He is one of their consultants.

"This will save you money on your utility bills. Ambit Energy guarantees to save you a minimum of 3% on your electricity and gas over the course of a year, or they pay the difference plus the 3%. Many bills save significantly more (they are the only energy provider to do this!).  There is no contract to sign and there is no sign up fee. You can cancel at any time."

Has anyone gone this route with their electricity and gas? What's the catch? Been reading out there and it is all negative and more of a
rip off/bait & switch tactic.

Thanks

Re: PA PowerSwitch??

  • I read up on this when I saw a news article. The information I found was you have to look at if it's a fixed rate or a variable (similar to mortages - the variable can adjust thus your payment can go up). The variable seemed to be the biggest area of contention as people's payments could adjust at any point. I think depending on who you go with, you may have to sign a contract and there were cancellation fees with some. We've decided to hold off and see how much our bills increase before doing any kind of a switch.
  • I agree with Gwen, we are taking the wait and see how much it actually increases approach also. It seems the price increase will be greatest if you have Penn Power and Duquesne Lights average increase will be $9.
