Food for a child's birthday party

My son is turning 3 and we're having his birthday at a park with about 15 people attending including kids.  My dilemma is what to serve for food.  It's at 11am and we have one vegetarian and one person that can't have tomato sauce.  Any ideas?  I need to think of something that won't break the budget.

Re: Food for a child's birthday party

  • I was just at a friend's 3 year old's birthday party and she had finger sandwich platters, veggies and dip and fruits as well as some snacks.

If you can bring a small charcoal grill, you could do hot dogs and burgers (veggie burgers or portobella for your veggie friend).
    • You can do peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and to dress them up, get some large cookie cutters to make the sandwiches into some fun shapes
    • Get some melons (if reasonably prices) and cut slices so you can again use small cookie cutters to cut them into shapes likes hearts, stars & circles, it makes it fun for the kids
    • If you don't have one treat yourself to a crinkle cutter. It has a wavy blades. Use that for cutting up veggies like cucumbers & carrotts. It makes them look fancier & the waves actually will help to hold dip better too
    • You can't go wrong with burgers & hot dogs either, maybe ask the vegetarian if there is a brand of veggie burgers/hot dogs that they like so you can pick up some of those. They may even offer to bring that themselves for you to cook (that's what my vegetarian friend does)
    • Pasta salad is always a good easy thing to make, some great kits out there (Suddenly Salad from Kraft)
    • And you can't go wrong with some cookies & brownies
  • You might consider a giant submarine sandwich with some sides from your local deli.  You can have them make a portion of it vegetarian.
  • I always ordered pizzas (Pizza Hut or Dominoes usually has a deal where you get 3 pizzas for $5 each) and you can bring something like a pasta salad for the vegetarian and non-tomato sauce eater.  I grilled hot dogs one year and it took me away from the party and I had to keep the kids away from the hot grill.  Never again!
