Decor ideas for new home? Please help! :)

Hi there, we just purchased a new home and I'm lost on decorating ideas, colors etc. My current home is modern, lots of mixes of patterns (chevron etc), wall colors are grey and décor colors are turquoise and coral. Our new home does not match this at all, but we fell in love with the house so we purchased it anyway. I do not have a rustic style, but the home is rustic. I'd LOVE to hear any ideas on how to decorate because I'm not so great at that...lol. I'll attach a photo of the new home Smile

Re: Decor ideas for new home? Please help! :)

  • Your wood flooring and fireplace, and the stone work, definitely evoke a distinctive style....as you said, rustic or garden. I could also see some French country or shabby chic in their if you had the right pieces and colors.

Honestly, your décor probably isn't going to be contemporary or modern with these features (unless you gutted it and started over). So, you could search for photos of the above décor types I listed and see if any help give you direction or a starting point.

  • If I had a house like this, I think I might just embrace it and go with dark leather couches, an antler chandelier, and a cowhide rug. If you do go this way, just be careful not to let it get too kitschy or country--don't hang eleventy bagillion things on the wall, don't have lots of figurines, avoid cute little sayings in frames, keep any taxidermy pieces classic, etc.

You would want to aim for this:

Paint, paint, pain.  Paint that stone and paint the walls girl. Seriously, you aren't going to get a contemporary look any other way.  And I'm too set in my contemporary ways- I couldn't embrace rustic ever.  Work around it.

This could definetely be made contemporary you just have to have some vision.
  • Hey do you want to change color and wall pattern or want advice for improving same?

Either you can change the color and whole decor of the room giving it full new look e.g. white walls with some colored pattern wall on one side...
Or add wooden furniture, and rock work on the room, may be some decor things! Like bench sofas n all..

Look into 'mountain modern' I think that is right up your ally.

  • It looks like the rocks do have some grey in them so you could definitely still go with a grey wall color if you really wanted to.  However, that flooring is undeniably rustic and I'm not sure that you could modernize it too much.  Otherwise, you could try going for a more modern rustic or modern country twist.  You could still accent with chevron and pops of the colors you love within it.

If you really want to do some thing with walls I would suggest you to paint with light color & buy abstract paintings for the wall. It will add life to the wall.
And buy some good matching furniture & lighting.
