Question about my bathroom remodel

We are having our master bathroom remodeled. Everything ripped out down to the studs and put back in new. So the contractor ripped out all the drywall - except the ceiling. He then put up new water proof drywall - I forget the exact title, but the green stuff, on the ceiling. When I asked him if he had ripped out the old ceiling he said no, everything will be fine when you put the new drywall over it. We have no idea about any of this stuff - is it ok to just put up the new ceiling over the old one? If its not do I fight him and make him rip out the new stuff and the old stuff and reapply the new drywall?

The ceiling wasn't in horrible shape, but it did have some scummy stuff over the shower area (poor ventilation was a major problem that we had in the old bathroom).
Thanks for any advice!

Re: Question about my bathroom remodel

  • Personally, I would want the old drywall ripped out....Doesn't make sense to have two layers of drywall, especially if the old stuff was sketchy.
  • Obviously I thought it was weird too....I just didn't know if that was standard procedure or not. I was at home today and realized that he hadn't walked by me dragging any more old drywall and when he called me in to show me something the new stuff was in place. If I had been out today I would have come home and assumed he had ripped the old stuff out and just put in new. He said that if he ripped down the old ceiling we'd have to deal with insulation.

I just looked over our contract and the first line reads : "Complete tear out of existing down to subfloor and wall studs as well as tear out of ceiling." Guess I'll be having a talk with him in the morning. :(
  • Hi - I wanted to report back and let you know that I spoke with the contractor and he ripped out the old ceiling. The conversation wasn't too bad. He did try to talk me out of it for a few minutes, but then he said it was what we wanted that mattered and he'd rip it out.

Thanks for being a sounding board. Hopefully this will be our only issue!
