Reading lottery: Special Topics in Calamity Physics (NS)

I hadn't heard of this book before the lottery, so I was excited to dive in to something I wouldn't have normally chosen for myself.

This was part murder mystery, part coming of age. I really appreciated the writing and LOVED the characters. I found myself caring about even the characters that were quite flawed and annoying at times. The main character, Blue, is constantly referencing different artworks and books - I can't imagine how much research must have gone into getting that stuff right, so I thought that whole aspect of her character/the book was really cool.

The story itself was a little rougher for me. I had trouble getting into it - though they reference the death in the first page, it doesn't happen until well into the story. Once the death happened I couldn't put it down... but by the time I got to the end I was feeling unsatisfied with it. I finished two days ago and I'm still trying to decide how I feel about it!

Re: Reading lottery: Special Topics in Calamity Physics (NS)

  • Oh I read this book a few years ago. I confess I picked it up solely for it's title (I have a degree in physics). I remember really enjoying it. I gave it 4/5 stars on Goodreads, but didn't write anything in the review so I can't remember why I enjoyed it so much. Maybe I'll have to do a reread!

  • I just picked this up at the library yesterday. I read Night Film by the same author and loved it! So far, I am having a harder time with this one though.

  • I'm so happy that you got to read this one.  I suggested it because of the very reasons you said -- it's virtually unheard of 'round these parts, the characters are amazing, and the story makes you think.
