Q. re. stray dog and Nashville Humane Association

Hey ladies,

I know there are a lot of pet owners and/or people with a lot of knowledge about animals on this board, so I thought I'd ask you all a question. ?A very adorable stray puppy ended up in our yard last week. We estimate he's about 6 months old, and most likely some type of beagle mix. ?He's so sweet and friendly, and obviously had a nice home before he ended up a stray. ?Our neighbors have been feeding him and taking him in at night, but sadly letting him roam free during the daytime (which is quite dangerous for the dog, given his love for chasing cars and squirrels). ?Despite the fact that this dog is great with little kids and animals, my husband and I don't feel that we can take him in permanently, given how young our daughters are right now.

We've posted pictures around the neighborhood, on petfinder.com, and had him scanned for a microchip - but still have no trace of an owner. ?I've also pleaded with friends to take him in, so I'm hoping someone will. ?But - my neighbors are tired of this dog running around all day long, and they have therefore made an appointment with Nashville Humane Association for this Friday.

?So my question is... (after this very longwinded intro) - is there a very good chance he'll be euthanized there? ?Or do they have a pretty successful adoption record? ?I'd hate to send this very cute dog to a kill shelter, so if any of you know of any rescue organizations that I could contact, I'd appreciate it.

?So sorry for my wordiness - thank you so much!!

Katie?

  • I'm so sorry to hear this!  I can't be much help, but I wanted to say that I think its great you're going through all this.  I certainaly don't know for sure, but my understanding of the Nashville Humane Society is that it is a "low kill" shelter . . . which isn't perfect, but I suppose is a step in the direction (assuming its true, of course).  Of course, its definitely a better option than calling Metro, and I do understand that pet owners usually call NHS to locate lost pets, so fingers crossed that will be the outcome for your little guy. . . . too bad DH has threatened to move out if I bring home another ;)  GL!
  • Another option might be Love at First Sight in Sylvan Park.  I know that they are a no kill shelter but they have a different policy than most shelters, I think they only take puppies and maybe even just unplanned litters.  I'm not sure if this dog would qualify but they might have some advice for you if they didn't.  We adopted our dog from there and she was one of a large unplanned litter.  Good luck!  Thanks for looking out for this little guy!
  • If you are willing to foster for a short while, Happy Tales Humane in Franklin is good too.  The big thing is that with the economy the way it is, all shelters are having problems right now.  The Maury County shelter is more crowded now than I've ever seen in the few months I've been there.

  • Thank you guys! ?I checked with Love at First Sight, but unfortunately he's already too old/ big for them to take in. ?I'll keep that one in Franklin in mind - thanks!!

This may have a happy ending after all - someone just emailed me back with a strong interest in adopting the dog. ?They're going to come by this week to see if their rat terrier gets along with this dog, and if so, I think he may have a happy new home! ?Keep your fingers crossed.?

  • I do lots of work with Happy Tales in Franklin. Last time I checked they are filled....they do not keep the dogs on site, they are all only kept in foster homes & brought in on Saturdays for adoption days. Williamson County Animal Shelter is also a very low kill shelter.

My neighbors found a beagle a few months ago (and it got loose & killed my bunny). They found a Beagle rescue in the area. I could always ask them if they still have the contact info if you'd like!

Email me & let me know!
