House Warming

We're moving into a new house soon. It's our first home that we'll own so it's special. My wife wants to have a big house warming and register somewhere so that if people choose to bring gifts it'll at least be things that we want and need.
We love IKEA and want to register there. I heard they only have a registry service in the Portland store- does anyone know more about this or if they might have this service in other stores?
Thanks in advance!

Re: House Warming

  • Ikea does not currently have a registry that is nationwide. Only specific stores have that option, so you would need to call your local store to see if they offer one.

Just a side note - if you are planning on having a registry for your housewarming, how are you planning on telling people that you have one? Including that information in an invitation is definitely not ok. Think back to your wedding - it's not proper etiquette to include registry information with an invitation. Also, don't expect gifts at a housewarming party - you are inviting people over to show them your new home, not to receive gifts.
  • Until I read about it here, I had NO idea that registries were sometimes done for housewarming parties.  Most people simply brought a bottle of wine or flowers to ours.  This is not a large gift giving occasion.  Most likely your guests have already had enough occasions to buy you extravagant gifts if you are currently considering a registry for your housewarming- showers, weddings, babies, etc.  Please don't burden them by expecting them to buy other gifts.
  • Thanks so much for the feedback!

The only reason we were thinking of doing a registry was because people were asking us about it.

Just for general knowledge, IKEA Portland is the only IKEA store that has a registry option. Of course weddings is their most popular but they also cover baby showers, etc.

Thanks again for all the feedback!
