Carpet or Hardwood?

We own a house in Twinsburg, and we are planning to replace our tired old living/dining room carpeting at some point. The big question is whether to replace it with new carpet, or some type of hardwood or laminate wood flooring?

Currently, our kitchen, foyer and family room all have wood laminate flooring in a very 1990s, orange-y oak color. If we went with hardwood, we'd have to replace ALL the flooring on the main floor so that it would match. It would be significantly more expensive than new carpeting in just the living and dining rooms.

I am not opposed to carpet. It's much cheaper and I think it makes the room feel cozy. Also, since the majority of homes in our area have wall-to-wall carpeting, I don't think it's "passe" in this region. However, I still feel pressure to go the hardwood route, since it's so appealing, would be great for resale value, and it's only a matter of time before it's the standard in all homes.

We have bamboo flooring in our dining room area. Very low maintenance Our living room is on a different floor (split level home) but when it comes time to replace the carpet we plan on doing wood (not sure if real or laminate) because easier to maintain. We have three rescue dogs who were never properly house broken, they seem to think carpet is grass. We clean the carpet basically weekly but when if we had a hard service I think that would reduce the accidents in the house, plus be easier to clean up and dog fur would be easier to clean up too. We are at differences about what to do in the bedrooms. I think again for ease of cleaning, hard service would be nice, but hubby wants carpets in the bedrooms.
