SBC book you haven't read in years: 1984
I just finished reading 1984 for the SBC task to reread a book you haven't read in years. The first time I read 1984 was the summer after I graduated from high school. It was one of the most memorable reading experiences I have ever had as it was the first dystopian book I had read, and I just remember feeling amazed at the world Orwell created. It truly made me think about the world in a different way.
Dystopian and post-apocalyptic books have since become one of my favorite genres to read, and I was excited to revisit the book that started me down that path. I was amazed all over again by the world Orwell created and it again challenged me to think about aspects of society in a new way. That's something I think was done in this book that isn't done in a lot of other dystopian books: while he details daily life in this world and the challenges people face, he goes deeper into the mentality that could cause a society to become that way. That really stood out to me now compared to the first time I read it, both because I am older and because I have read so many other books in the genre. This book was also a lot darker than I remembered. Some of the brutality Winston experiences was hard for me to read.
I am glad I revisited this book that was so important to me as a reader. Even though my impressions of it have changed quite a bit it remains one of my favorite books and one I think everyone should read.
