decoration ideas!?!

I need help with decor for my fireplace mantel! We bought our house 2 yrs ago and I still don't know what to put up there. This pic is from Christmas and the only time there were things up there. Because its open between the living room and family room I can't put a mirror up, or picture frames because then you'll see the backs from the other side. Please help! And pics might help

You definitely need something that can be viewed from both sides. I would go with some decorative vases like so:

  • I like the vase idea if you are trying to maintain the pass through between the rooms.

But if you weren't hooked on that you could also suspend a framed piece of stained glass from the ceiling - if the area gets much light it could add some pretty highlights to the area and can be viewed from both sides.  Stained glass comes in all different shapes/sizes and styles.  I myself prefer the clear glass patterns with just some texture to the glass but there are pieces available to fit any style country, modern, bright or mellow colors etc...

The other option would be to get an old fashioned window for the same purpose.
  • Haha before I read the entire thread, I thought, "window or stained glass." So, DITTO to the PP. Many are for sale on eBay at various price points. Be sure to buy a window that is the correct scale and size for the opening. Something too small will look odd. You can probably find ones with colors too if you like those or go with all clear glass.
