Healthy-ish Snack Ideas

Hi All,

I've never posted on this board before, but I was hoping you all might be able to suggest some snack food ideas that you all enjoy. DH is a big snacker but his choice in snacks tends to resemble the diet of a teenage boy (think doritos, bbq potato chips, nachos, etc.) and he's expressed an interest in eating healthier but he can't seem to get away from the junk food snacks.

I'm not a big snacker, but when I do want a snack I'm all over the nuts, fresh fruit and veggies --I've tried buying lots of different fresh produce for DH to munch on but I end up having to eat all of it because he won't really want it (the only veggies/fruit he eats consistently are cucumbers or sugar snap peas with ranch, and occasionally edamame).

I guess I'm just wondering what some of your favorite healthy-ish snacks are (extra points if you can get it at Costco since I'm stopping there after work today! :) ).

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: Healthy-ish Snack Ideas

  • I like making roasted chickpeas: Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas. Toss with olive oil and your choice of seasonings (paprika, parmesan cheese, cinnamon, chili powder, salt, etc) and roast in the oven at 400 until crunchy.

Homemade popcorn is also a healthy snack -- just throw a 1/4 cup of kernels in a brown lunch bag and cook in the microwave for about 2.5 minutes. Season as desired.

I keep mostly nuts, dried fruit and seeds in our cabinets with some hidden chocolate chips and pretzels. It lets me make trail mix for the hubs that he can munch on or take as a snack for lunch.
  • My H Is similar in that he doesn't eat fruits & veggies. What I try to do is substitute his snacks for a healthier version (baked chips, etc.) or I'll use healthier recipes (like nachos). I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get him to snack on fruits and veggies, but I do what I can!

  • Your DH and I are like the same person!  Even as to what healthy items we will eat!

I love hummus with crackers and find myself turning to that now over chips or cookies all the time.  I'm in love with edamame too.

There are tons of snacks that have the bite of chips but are a little healthier.

We love dried corn and soynuts, and they come in delicious "chip like" flavours like lime chili and BBQ. Also banana chips or root vegetable chips can be healthier. You can also make your own pita chips by baking them in the oven.  And nuts! Don't go "nuts" on the nuts since they can be pretty high calorie, but I find since they are much better for you they fill you up faster. good luck!
  • Thanks for all the recommendations guys! Some of these ideas made me hungry and DH seems on board with trying some of these so hopefully we'll find something he likes. Thanks again! :)
