Best place for NJ beach getaway?

My husband, toddler, and I are heading to NJ for a week in late August. We're staying at a friends house for part of the trip, but we'd like to slip away to the beach for a few nights so that they don't have to host us for the entire trip. We thought about staying in Cape May, but since we don't need a full-week rental and we'd like to stay someplace decent (and we're booking a bit late in high season!), we're having a hard time finding a place. Any tips for us? Any toddler-friendly beach towns that we should consider? Any specific hotels/rentals we should look into?

We have always stayed in Avalon (since I was born) and most recently take a week in LBI  great for kids too
  • Spring Lake is my favorite part of the NJ shore.  There are a few hotels out on Route 35 that don't always sell out.

Wildwood is going to have the most late availability.
