We've booked a trip to Chicago for August. I've been hearing of a lot of shootings recently. Do you think it's still ok to travel there?

That doesn't seem to be anything new in big cities like Chicago. I'm from the Detroit area and it happens here pretty regularly too. I'm sure you'll be fine; my guess is most of that stuff happens in the neighborhoods rather than in the downtown touristy area. I could be wrong, but it can't hurt to research where these are actually happening. Maybe try local news websites for them.
