What historical fiction time/place are you drawn toward?

I feel like every time I read historical fiction it is WWII, Civil War or (more rare but my favorite) Little House/Westward Expansion/Pioneering times.

Do you have a time that you tend toward?

Re: What historical fiction time/place are you drawn toward?

  • I also have a tendency to gravitate toward the Civil War Era and also the Westward Expansion.  And also WWII (there just seems to be a lot of fiction written around WWII).

I have recently found myself drawn toward WWI.  I have been looking for more and more novels written around the first world war.

And I also love anything Camelot, King Arthur related.  Or just castles, knights, dragons, etc even though it isn't "real'  historical fiction.

  • Usually the Tudor era in England (occasionally a bit earlier), the Civil War Era, or the 1950s/60s, specifically civil rights related.

Recently I've been drawn to books set in medieval Europe (a la 'Pillars of the Earth').

My favorite time to read about is the 1920s, though sadly I don't see too many books set then. I am fascinated with the flappers, the prohibition, and the women's suffrage movements. I've mostly read books set in NY during this time period, but I'd love to read stuff set in other locations.

Other than that, I tend to like WWII era or books set in England, Scotland and thereabouts in all different time periods.

Have you tried the Maisie Dobbs mysteries?  They are set around WWI.

  • I'm drawn to anything about civilians during WW2. I'm just so amazed at what some of them, especially like people living in London and being bombed, went through.

  • I'm really drawn to stories about the first half of the 20th century. I also love the Tudor period and WWII. I feel like WWI doesn't get as much attention, but that's around the time of the Downton Abbey era so I would like to read more stories from that time.

I also really love stories that span generations, so a story that starts with the matriarch of a family's life story and goes through all the generations would be right up my alley. The only one I can think of (besides Roots and Queen) is The Wakefields of Sweet Valley. (It's early for me and I haven't had caffeine, please don't judge)
