Re: Share your proposal story!

  • It was Christmas of 2012. And my husband was SO excited to open gifts, like a little kid! I figured it was because it was our first christmas together and his family was never really into the spirit of Christmas, and i just LOVE the season so I go all out. Anyway, we wake up in the morning and exchange gifts. I open his and it's this stuffed bear with diamond earrings on the ears (how cute is that?!) Needless to say, I didn't expect anything else! Diamond earrings was plenty!
Later on in the day, we go to my dad's to finish opening gifts with him. We're all done and my dad brings out one more for me. I figured this was my "big" gift from him that us kids get every year. So I start opening the gift and inside is a smaller wrapped box, and then inside it is ANOTHER smaller wrapped box, and so on and so on until I get to the last box and when I open it, there's a note inside. The note was from my husband expressing his love to me. When I finished the letter, I look up and he's down on his knee in front of my whole family with the ring, proposing!! I start bawling, and everyone else starts bawling. I was so excited I put the ring on my finger MYSELF! haha It was the most adorable thing and now Christmas will always have an additional special meaning to us :)

He said, "Will you marry me?" and then I said, "Yes."

  • Ours was sweet and idiotic.

I was coming home to spend Christmas with my boyfriend - I'd been living in China for some time by that point. He picked me up at the airport and as a surprise drove me to Banff (Canada - beautiful mountain resort town). On the way there the car broke down, in bear country. We finally got to the resort and it was lovely - he was being all nervous and strange but whatever, I had chalked it up to the wild moose that ran through the restaurant and past our table during dinner.

We went back to our room to... erm....settle in for the night, when he told me he was thirsty - could I go out to the vending machine in the hall to get him some apple juice?

I was all 'what the hell?' I've just flown 16 hours, endured a broken down car and had my entree upended by a moose... YOU got get some apple juice! He made some lame excuse and out I went, grumbling the whole way to get him some stupid apple juice.

When I came back into the room the lights were off and he was down on one knee in front of the fire, holding out a beautiful diamond ring and asking me to be his wife - he didn't want me to stay, he wanted to travel the world with me again and forever.

I shouted YES!, burst into tears and rushed toward him - tripping over the carpet and knocking my suitcase into the fire. We both screamed, pulled it out and stamped out the flames with expensive white hotel towels. Then we just looked at each other and laughed - and we have been laughing together every day since.

Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!

  • DH and I lived about 4 hours apart so on the weekends we usually planned for a special "date night" on one of those nights. The night that DH proposed was just another "date night" in my mind but he made it a bit more special. He had told me that we were going to a charity concert that his mom's best friend was holding/performing and that we would stay that night at a hotel in the city so we had to dress up.

I thought nothing much of it, drove to my aunt's house in the city, got ready and DH picked me up from there (according to my aunt who saw him before he walked in the house, DH looked like he was ready to puke. lol). We went for a nice dinner at the casino, gambled a bit, and then headed to the concert. At the concert, DH kept going out to smoke and at one point when he had left to smoke, his mom's friend (like a second mom to him) stopped and started talking about her "golden boy" and told the crowd that she had promised him she would sing a song for him to which she proceeded to sing a beautiful love song. She choked up half way through, and looked into the crowd and apologized to DH for choking up but I had to shout to her that he was out smoking and missed it! Hahahaha, she was furious! So she went on to sing something else.

When DH came back, I laughed, told him what happened, and he was quite upset but shrugged it off. After the concert, we were supposed to go back to the casino but I could tell he wasn't in the best mood so we went to the hotel instead. When I walked into the room, there were flower petals leading to the bedroom and on the bed there was a blanket folded into a heart with a ring and in the petals, he had wrote out "Will you marry me?" (which I didn't notice until after because I had immediately zoomed in on the ring!). I turned around (he was crying.... yeah, he's a crier... he bawled at the wedding too. lol) and gave him a big hug. Then he asked "is that a yes?" when I said "uh huh", he let out a huge sigh of relief and told me he was worried I was going to say no. Hahaha

It was all very sweet and romantic. The ring he picked was perfect for me and when he picked it, he was even considerate of my job (Gr 1 teacher.... he picked somehing that I couldn't accidentally scratch the kids with). It even fit perfect and he didn't know my ring size!

The evening ended by me requesting that we get married on my grandparents' 62nd wedding anniversary, and we did! It was a wonderful day of laughter, friends, and family. Here's hoping we have just as much luck as my grandparents did! :)
